Ok, so I am an idiot.
The problem was neither with the database nor with the installation. I
absent mindedly made a change in /etc/hosts that affected the entry for
127.0.0.1.
That entry has to include "localhost localhost.localdomain", or else

I'm wrong. It's not a database problem.
It occurred to me that since I have two machines running the same version
of Rivendell, I should be able to backup the database from vipera (the
machine that doesn't have the problem) and restore it to farancia (the one
that does have the problem).

Yes.
(The data in those dialogs mostly live
in a table called ‘USERS’, but looking directly at that won’t be

Are able to create another user to login with ? Does another account work ?
RDAdmin -> Manage Users ...
Here's an out there --
Is the account set up with Administrative Rights ? I've learned that using an

When I run rdlogin, it says "Current user: unknown".
If I select a user, or press the Default User button, the program
immediately quits.
If I run it again, it still says "Current user: unknown".
So, the problem appears to be some database value that isn't letting it
set the user.

There’s your problem with sound panel play-out then (and a slew of other stuff
not working as well).
Can you use RDLogin to log in as other users? How a
It says "User: " with nothing after it, and then "Log: wcvr-tuesday".

Unfortunately, upgrading the old database to 2.19.3 and then upgrading it
to 3.6.5 didn't solve the problem. I am still experiencing the same
symptoms.
If I start rdairplay in a terminal window, select Sound Panel. click on

This may be a clue. Running rdairplay from a terminal window, when I
select Sound Panel and press the Setup button, then click on Panel S:1 to
rename it, the following message appears in the terminal window:

I also can't see any logs or services in rdlogedit. And yes, I have the
service permissions for user set.
I eveb tried creating a new user 'bozo' and assigned it all group and
service permissions... but it can't see anything, either.
Curiously, logs and audio cuts are available in rdairplay
I have an old machine installed at WCVR running RD 2.1.5 under Centos 6.
It was built in 2017.
I want to replace it with a new machine I've just built that runs RD 3.6.5
under CentOS 7. Both machines have the same name
("farancia.sugarrivermedia.com") but different IP addresses.
