from a cron job and checks that the process name is running. If not, I restart

For a completely crashed system, we use a Sine linkage on a silly hacked UPS.

package you may have to install on other linux Os's and then at client
end windows or linux just use the vnc client.
Go to System Preferences Remote Desktop
Set up sharing and a password and it should be all go.

I just saw Ubuntu -- not RRAUbuntu, or anything like that.
My Rivendell systems are built on Ubuntu 10.04, and have no problems
with VNC at all.
I do have to check the preferences and make sure that all visual-effects
are disabled though.
