Note that you could [try to] build 5.10.rc0 now, and when the final gets
out, simply run 'sage --upgrade' (which shouldn't involve much rebuil

On the bright side, I haven't had any ATLAS errors yet!
On the other hand, we have no idea [yet] what went wrong in the first

You may try reinstalling ATLAS with SAGE_ATLAS_ARCH=fast or
SAGE_ATLAS_ARCH=base though (see [1]), i.e.
$ export SAGE_ATLAS_ARCH=...
$ make

If you're not compiling a sage with a very recent libm4rie, 1GB+0.5GB
will *not* be enough.
