and that you can (at least) ping the 2008 box
Then try to join the domain:
net ads join -UAdministrator
That may get you a little closer.

The solution was actually creating the private dir, then smbpasswd -a create
the rest. Just seemed odd that I would have to mkdir a samba install, I

I think your problem is that you don't have a path= statement in your
[homes] defininition.
You need a :-
path=/home/%u
or similar otherwise samba won't know what to share!!

Every time I try to access the [homes] share steve I am prompted for my
username and password which are not accepted. I have tried setting
security=user and security=server in the global but to no avail, the same
prompt
then cause the Connect As dialog box to appear (because of unknown

I fired up ethereal and did some poking around. Here's what I found.

Below are a number of errors that appeared in a log file today.
I am running Samba v2.2.5 on a Red Hat Linux v7.3 system. The client
experiencing/causing the errors below is a WinXP(SP1) machine.
The log entries below pertain to 2 errors, the first in handling file

smb.conf was the same before and
after the upgrade to -4 -- in which case, I would suggest that an
ill-fated config change took effect when smbd restarted at the time of
the upgrade?
