Another word that could possibly apply would be sputtered. It's the
process where electrons impinging on the surface drive off atoms of the
metal. I know it works in vacuum, I'm not so sure it applies in an
electrolytic process.
Sintered is definitely wrong.

correct, it does appear to be the wrong word used for the action.
Stripped would probably be a better choice of words.
