Try this at your own risk:
It is possible to (reasonably) safely de-vacuum a tube: The nipple is in the
centre of the plug right at the back of the tube. If you squash (squeeze) the
centre plastic protrusion with a pair of bull-nose pliers, the nipple will
crack, letting the air in more
the tools available to you using a graphical interface
called synaptic (system-administration-synaptic). There are a huge
number of tools available but the likely hood of you using them is not
that high.

I finally twigged to the problem with the script. The command gvim will
automatically background itself so that editor opens the file then saves
it AFTER the gpg to encrypt and remove has run.

OK I have written gpgedit, strangely the script is not deleting the file
yet rm does in command line. This is really strange. Also files are
coming up empty then they have data.
I have forced the system to check tun2fs -C 99 then rebooted. This IS
an ext3 system and the check happened
only. Also I have run set -x the script
is correct it is just not doing the rm and other strange results.

`apt-get autoclean` is better because it deletes the debs that are old

The initial attack was by social engineering. One developers key was
compromised due to their lack of security thought. With one weak link in
the chain then it all comes down.
I am not sure under this circumstance how better encryption would have
helped.

interesting ideas out there plus personal experience of how review

While I do not disagree with this in principle please let's stick to the
facts. The packages are supplied by gentoo packagers who do maintain
the packages to the best of their ability. The average gentoo user does
not have to concern themselves with tracking.

The reason FOSS works is because many people have different ideas on
things and work on 'their thing'. Tex for word processing or
Openoffice.org, the choice is yours, different tools for different users
or purposes.
