In my case it was a matter of setting pulse audio to use the correct
alsa channel. I don't have access to the machine right now but from
memory and using examples from the computer i am on,
on my machine now, doing `aplay -l` gives:
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: AD198x Analo

Yes, but video only, because it's running an old version of Mythbuntu
and the driver& also versions installed don't support HD

I'm considering building myself another
Myth/buntu/XBMC box to use as a media centre (not
for recording TV).
