Bit late to join the thread but this little plastic thing which fits in the
headphone socket and the lightning port on my 5s seems to keep most undesirable
objects and fluff out of the respective holes. Available on Amazon or eBay.

fixed it! 🙂

I had something similar with a phone. Although it looked ok, when I
decided to dig around in there with a paperclip (repeat at your own risk!)
I got a disgusting amount of fluff out that was a grey colour which
rendered it invisible to inspection.

Very weird one.
I’ve had my iPod touch 5th generation almost since they were released and never
had a problem charging it. Last night I went to charge it and the lightning
cable would not fit in the socket!
Mindful of a similar issue when I could not get the headphones in due to fluff
