Wow yeah Metamesh with the horse
Remembered using it, us then all using it gave me the impression that it
was
SCM is still there actually, just in the doco it's called that, but in the
menu (createsurf.mesh) it's simply Continuity Manager.
It still works too, more or less, or did a couple years ago when, believe
it or not, I ended up using it :)

I wonder if nurbs are still used for characters in big productions? I knew
Shrek was made of nurbs in the first movie, is it still the case today?
