Are we talking about XL? I would guess that the crew that performed the
final cutbacks threaded the pipe too shallow. If the space above ceiling is
plenum space, the leaks may never show themselves below ceiling.
I would be interested to see a fitting cut in half in order to find out

We just had a similar issue where we had to replace a lot of 1" pipe in a rack
system that was installed approximately 2 yrs ago. The threads corroded
tremendously at the welded outlets in a rack system. I am convinced that in
this particular case part of the problem was a lack of pipe dope or t

I think your comment number 3 may be part of the problem, based on
what I am hearing. Also, are fittings made in all the way or can they
be? Are the drops threadable thinwall as well?

I'm trying to get my arms around a really interesting problem at a local
jail where a 7 year old sprinkler system is failing at a variety of spots
due to corrosion. I looked at the system this morning and here's what I
found:

Really NOT that difficult. If the valves are in good shape, bolts are easy
to remove, and working area is accessible then it would probably be better
to change the packings. Even if you change out the valve, now that you know
about the asbestos, you must dispose of the contaminated products correct
Yes, the consultant explained that. But the air must he monitored to

Check with an asbestos consultant, but most products containing asbestos can
be handled without making the asbestos airborn, thereby only requiring that
they be disposed of properly. Product containing asbestos are NOT deadly in
and alone of themselves, it's when the asbestos becomes airborn in dus
To cover all bases, I contacted the local OSHA consult office and was informed
of the following: If the old valve packing contained asbestos, then the
asbestos standard would apply.
The air would have to be monitored and workers trained about asbestos hazards.
So it seems it may be cheaper to r

In my humble opinion, no.
Keep in mind that the distance between the deflector and ceiling is
measured throughout the area of coverage (except for ceiling pockets
and single vertical change (8.6.4.1.1.3). That does not sound like an
issue either (but it's often overlooked)

Roland. Bottom line, does a 6" deep ceiling pocket without a
sprinkler in it constitute an unprotected pocket, even if the
distance from the deflector to the top of the pocket is less than 12"?

As for not allowing the QR reduction, it is explicitly stated in 13.
You're just looking in the wrong location. 8.6.7 tells about
protecting ceiling pockets (or not) whereas 11.2.3.2.3(4) allows t

If you don't already own a set, purchase a set of "Packing pullers"
T-handled cork screw's for threading into old packing to assist in pulling.
Much neater than using old screw drivers.

Barry,
Thanks for forwarding the VAHB diatribe. It's amazing the things you

I've seen two answers so far that rely on Aristotelian logic. The
first with how something operates and the second political. While both
may ultimately be correct, the tight sheetrock may act as the
escutcheon ring and the rules behind this may be political we don't
know. What we do know is that no

Jay,
This looks like another example of our government dollars hard at work.
I am not aware of anything that states a sprinkler will or will not operate
without the escutcheon. Maybe a manufacturer's rep would be willing to
write a short statement explaining that while sprinklers and escutcheons
