For those who don't like the look of aluminum rail, you can use a product that we use at the PA live Steamers called Sikkens. It's a "heavy" paint like stain that we put on the plywood top, rail, and ties all at once. Wipe the top of the rail off after applying it. It comes in different colors. Cho

If you are going to hand spike the rail to the ties, be sure the spike goes all the way through the tie ans sticks out the bottom side. This helps prevent the spikes from backing out. "The roofing nail phenomanon." Keep your steam up! Walt & Lunk

Jim your points are correct. That is one reason I now pay for stainless steel rail clamps, less resistance at joints and I have never had a SS clamp break. Brass clamps have broken. I remove slip on joiners for outdoor track and install the clamps. Buying 8' long rail means fewer clamps and fewer

My experience is that any smooth rail is slippery outdoors if moisture exists. Grade and load the engine is hauling can cause any engine to slip. The three steam engines I have run on my track ran as well as the electrics that had no rubber traction tire. The axle loading also affects traction.

Vance, Mine is the newer Cricket, in fact the next to last one produced. So the safety valve was outside the cab and the dome just fits over it. I modified the original roof so that it is removable. Bob
