I finally found the problem. Many thanks for all the hints.
I try to describe it a bit more in detail, maybe it helps someone.
The solution was as mentioned above, formatting the HDD on windows.
I did it on a mac via bootcamp on windows XP. But that was not all.
I found out, that the disk utilit

This would be my main suspect at the moment. Try a different format,
different utility or use a computer running a "proper" Microsoft OS for

This is so annoying. I just recieved the LaCie Design HDD 1TB, formatted
it on a Mac with disk utility to FAT format, copied 10 sound files in
mp3, flac and so on to it. It is not working even with this disk. The
scan only goes to the first message and not to the third. What is
wrong?

When I connect my harddrive to the SBT and start the server, I only
receive the message "discovering files: complete" and no sound files
can be detected, even if I leave it on for several hours and with very
few files on the drive.
I now tried a very old USB stick and there it shows all three scan
Hi John
Many thanks for your advice.
I reformatted the harddrive and just put 3 sound files on it (aiff, m4v
and mp3). I connected the drive, then started the server. When I go to
the server status before accessing anything else, it shows "discovering
files: complete" no more messages are coming u

Hi
I copied 9 GB of soundfiles to the harddrive. When I connect the drive
to the SBT, the following happens:
Connecting USB, important message, start squeezebox server, starting
server, my music, connecting to USB (takes only one second), no sound
files found
This process is quite fast, only star

no. if you plug in the usb drive after the touch is up and runn
My harddrive has only one partition and for test reasons, I tried with 5
sound files only. I assume, the scan for files is starting automatically
when I start the server and try to choose the file?

I bought the SBT on amazon, tried 40gb, 250gb, and freecom 1TB and WD
elements 1TB with FAT formatting and flac, mp3, aac and apple lossless
files directly connected to the SBT. The drive can be connected, the
server is starting, but no music files are detected. The drives all
