That is correct. However, it is not half as complicated as people think,
especially if doing such a trivial change. Here's a guide to do just that I
wrote while I was using Debian.
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16t=36525 I suggest you try it,
even if just for fun and learning.

Have you written to the manufacturer and clearly indicated you wish to
use this hardware on GNU/Linux?
It's important to do this so they get an indication of such demand.
I have been forced to use Ubuntu on my Toshiba notebook because Trisquel
won't recognize its graphics card (AMD A8-3500M based).
When I boot from CD it comes up to a command line. Ctrl+Alt+F7 reveals this

Here are my few cents:
If you want full compatibility with best featureset under free license then
stick to Intel. In general Intel will be quite pricy compared to AMD CPUs.
Despite the big stinko master Torvalds has sent towards NVidia, they still

The different pages I found about the Xonar STX didn't show any external
dependencies. Also most standard soundcards I am aware of (even USB ones) do
not need any firmware.
I am pretty confident the card will work without issues.
May I ask what keeps your from testing Trisquel with the

While Samsung will certainly suffer lost sales from the issuance of an
injunction, the hardship to Apple of having to directly compete with
Samsung’s infringing products outweighs Samsung’s harm
I agree Dave. Do you have this particular piece of hardware already or is it
something you were thinking of buying? If you have it already try a liveCD
and see what happens.
I have vowed off Apple since the mid-90s. I've actively and
purposefully avoided everything related to them and advised everyone I
know to NOT use or buy their products, including iTunes and QuickTime
software.
Apple is evil. $536+ billion market capitalization. Ever hear the
expression,
I think you're addressing me?
I do not have the subject piece of hardware, but just offered the 'live
cd' comment as a bit of general advice. My experience before the days
of live media was very frustrating.

I am certainly not a fan of Apple, though I got an i-phone quite a while
back. I was very impressed by its Google maps function, at the time. I liked
being able to go online with it and search the internet, without having to
have a laptop with me. The one feature I liked about i-tunes is
Yeah looks like the key is there alright, so maybe thats OK. Still doesn't
explain why the Update Manager isn't asking for a root password before
downloading and installing the updates. Maybe that's just on my system?
An Apple rotten to the core but people keep buying their products.
I usually update via apt-get, but I think the update manager only ask for
password when there is an 'important' system upgrade.
You could try GNU/Linux Mint instead. Just to let you know, we're not suppose
to discuss non-free software on this forum.
I used to be an Apple fanboy. Didn't know any better. I thoroughly despised
Microsoft. Now I despise them both ;). You can by the way probably make a
case that Apple is even worse than Microsoft in many aspects!
I am aware of that rule. However, Trisquel doesn't address all hardware. Had
I known Trisquel was not supported by the AMD graphics card/device in my
notebook (as I use only AMD graphics cards on all of my computer hardware and
they all work with Trisquel 5.x), I would've gotten something

As far as I understand, 'sudo' is called by 'gksu', itself called by the
application requiring administrative privileges (and, yes, these privileges
are definitely needed to install *any* program, i.e., to write in folders
such as /usr that must be owned by root:root). The variable
What makes you think F-Droid isn't maintained? I get updates, see new

You can install non-approved software on Apple phones and tablets if you
jailbreak. You can even install a port of Android:

Also, older versions of the iPod music player support Rockbox:

Yup, you can install whatever you want on a jailbroken iPhone. Just like the
Android phones, anyone can void their warranty to throw whatever they want on
those little devices.
I'm saying for the less tech saavy (mother, grandmother, etc) that would not
root or jailbreak their Verizon
The less tech savvy will simply install software from the store that comes
pre-installed on the device. Very few will install alternative stores like
F-Droid unless a tech savvy relative helps out.
