I disagree. It's not that stupid. The US government has significant resources
and if you look at what is actually going on you can clearly see it. The
evidence of the level of and the insane amount of spying on Americans and
others is all over the place.
There is lots out there on how the
So this appear to be using the RTL8188SU chipset which is not free software
friendly. It'll be a no go in Trisquel.
Why not simply copy and paste the list of packages after your
sudo apt-get install trisquel
?
Save it in a text file; if you don't like kde anymore, copy the content and
do the following:
sudo apt-get remove insert-content-here
I'm not quite sure if this works but I don't know why not.

Alright, no surprise there. I'll come back to trisquel at my first
opportunity.
Thanks again everyone.
I think I overlooked this comment. If I can still log into a gnome session
when triskel is installed, could I just change the default login to be gnome
rather than KDE?
@SilverSlimer:
Unfortunately you still didn't state what you consider ripping but anyway.
If ripping means for you transfering encrypted DVDs to HDD for further
processing then you might want to check out this thread:

I posted my DVD backup
Thanks for explanation. And what about ffmpeg if it is compiled with aac
encoding support ?

Yes. GDM (and probably KDM) default to whatever DE was used last.
Andrew.
What's the full name of the .iso and where did you put it?
If e.g. your iso is lala.iso and it's on Desktop, open a terminal and input
md5sum ~/Desktop/lala.iso
Thanks for your reply.
I installed gconf-editor but still doesn't work.
Hi! Try to boot with another cd, if it works you have a problem with the cd
you are booting from, if not you have a buggy drive. That happens with time.
They stop booting from then, never knew why. If the USB is out of the
question try to burn the cd in another drive. The few installations I
I have a new install, and haven't set a password since I installed.
I want to set a password for the account Trisquel, but when I use User
Settings, I need to put my current password for it to change.
I have tried putting both blank and password, but neither of those work.

Try trisquel.
Hi!
I tried installing the portuguese language through the language support in
the systems settings and it gives me this error:

So Ubuntu 14.04 will have Unity 8.0 and Mir as their default DE and display
server. What will this mean for Trisquel? I'm assuming Ruben will want to
keep GNOME 3 as the default DE - how is he going to implement 2D support?
Will Trisquel 7.0 have to be based on Xubuntu or any other *buntu
The other thing I was thinking of was that if, in the future, Trisquel will
return to Debian as its base - perhaps gNewSense could amalgamate with
Trisquel - or at least share development resources, since both distros would
be sharing a common base, both technologically and politically.
Sorry, hadn't read that part of his comment. But anyway, I had the same
problem with my HP Pavilion but that problem was easily solved after flashing
my BIOS with a modded version. For your notebook you can look for example to:
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

This news about Ubuntu 14.04 is indeed troubling.
To be honest, I'm not sure what the solution is - but I think it's pretty
clear that it will become harder and harder to provide a free distro based on
Ubuntu, as it becomes less and less free.
ffmpeg is compiled without non-free AAC encoder.
By typing ffmpeg into terminal you can see what flags were enabled during
compilation.
Here is ffmpeg on my Parabola computer (on Trisquel I think libx264 isn't
available in ffmpeg due to software patents):
ffmpeg
ffmpeg version 1.2.1
I think a Debian stable + an optional backported Linux-libre kernel updated
mesa driver stack could work well - kind of what the Ubuntu LTS point
releases are doing.
Sure, the programs might be a bit dated, but you can always add program
specific PPAs.
An interesting (although
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

You might be on to something there. But IMO there would have to be a few more
backported packages than just the kernel and some drivers. A web browser, for
example.
PPAs are great, but we don't want users relying on them too much, because
Trisquel already deviates from Ubuntu's choice of a default DE. I doubt this
change will cause many problems.
Also, isn't Mir free software?
That does work. It is actually the same as grepping in the
/var/log/apt/history.log* files what are the packages that were installed
along with triskel (you wrote trisquel by mistake)... except that you
make your own separate log.
If I were you, I would acquire a large (say 16 GB) USB Flash drive. It is not
that expensive (a few tens of dollars) and very useful (not only to install a
GNU/Linux distribution).
What's the full name of the .iso and where did you put it?
Right now it is only on the disc. I can move it to the desktop to make it
easier.
If e.g. your iso is lala.iso and it's on Desktop, open a terminal and input
md5sum ~/Desktop/lala.iso
(And yes, it's case sensitive so Desktop
Yeah. You don't need to remove KDE to still use GNOME. GDM automatically
changes your default DE whenever you log in to whatever you used that time.
Do I hit enter after typing md5sum ~/Desktop/lala.iso?
Yes. Except use trisquel-whatever-version.iso instead of lala
Do I type in -/Des and hit the tab after pressing Enter following the
previous command or do it all on the same line?
What exactly does it mean to complete paths?
I mean you
First of all, you should update (e.g., with the Update Manager). Trisquel's
Web browser now is at version 21.0, whereas you are apparently still using
version 16.0.1.
Then, I do not know why it is so but the beginning of the DEB file name
should be abrowser and not firefox. For instance,
I completely agree on the Klein and Snowden thing. But given all that
bullshit, I'm not sure that the buggy features of this or that chip are worth
debating.
If they're pulling a copy of all our traffic (and it seems clear that they
are), then running a compromised chip is only represents
I live in Canada. I don't have to worry about the US government.
I recognize that the attacks on our freedom and privacy by the hardware
companies increase rapidly and it gets more and more complicated to buy a pc
which respects our freedom.
I'm not into all those things that deep like chris and many others of you,
but I heard a lot about vpro,
If anything, you have to worry more. They just love letting themselves off
the hook by saying we're only really putting our major effort into tracking
those foreigners.

Any more information for us on disabling vPro?
Thanks!
For me it didn't work immediately. Additionally I needed to call:
/etc/init.d/virtualbox restart
After the script reloading the modules an Ububtu machine worked. Anyway this
is a very nice guide, thanks!
You do know how the Internet works, right?
And that ambassadors are paid to say that stuff?

I'm guessing X11 will still be packaged. Otherwise Kubuntu et al. are in
a lot of trouble.

It probably is, for most of us.
But you live in Canada and run an adblock add-on, so you probably have
nothing to worry about anyway. Problem solved.

(Seriously, if and when I find anything out, I'll post it.)
I can't tell how serious you are.
We need hardware that respects our freedom. We can't debate if it is spying
when there is no way for us to readily investigate it. We are dependent on
many pieces that may or may not be active at the moment.
What the NSA can do is spy on those who don't use encryption (most of us).

Modifying the BIOS and flashing it can be risky.
The fallback mode is not maintained anymore. Nevertheless, since GNOME 3.8,
there is GNOME Classic that is GNOME Shell + a bunch of extensions that
make it look and behave like GNOME 2.
Notice that the CPU can now render GNOME Shell. No need for 3D acceleration.
When was the Yeeloong released?
Weary means tired out, wary means being cautious of something.
Chris makes a lot of typos, but it's only because he finds content is more
important than presentation (and it is). I read somewhere that Einstein said
it would be a shame if the wrapper were better than the product inside it

When saving an image, GIMP crashes. The image gets saved correctly, but it is
very bothersome.
I am running GIMP 2.6.12 on Trisquel 6.0.
I run MATE from the official PPA in Trisquel 6 and it has worked fine for me.
The default implementation is rough around the edges and I decided to purge
it out and replace with MATE.
It works well and the low system resources are why it is my preferred DE.
I have this same problem. It only crashes when saving PNG images for me.
Other file-types save without crashing. Same for you?
I posted my problem in the thread GIMP auto-close. See if you like any of
the solutions.
Recently I saved an PNG image with 15000px in GIMP and it doesn't crashes.
Fortunately here everything seems to work fine.
I had the same problem so I uninstalled gimp and then reinstalled it through
the terminal. That seems to have fixed the problem for me, perhaps it will
work for you?
Yeah, I followed the directions on the RabbitVcs site:
http://wiki.rabbitvcs.org/wiki/install/ubuntu. The only thing I did not do
was link the launchpad PPA since I figured pulling from the trisquel repo
would be safer.
This is the Yeelong model I might consider buying sometime in the future
(unless at that time there is a newer model):
