A PPA can also be removed this way but I don't believe the software installed
from it is removed and replaced by the versions by the distribution (if they
are available).
Netgreat WG111v3 does not connect to WEP networks on a live CD but connects
fine after you install Trisquel.
I tried removing a PPA using ppa-purge from Taranis backports but it didn't
work. Even installing a newer version of ppa-purge (from Ubuntu's
repositories) and adding -d lucid didn't help. I suppose the only PPAs one
can remove are those specifically designed for Trisquel which really limits
Rubén Rodríguez, thanks for the reply. Could you please elaborate your
answer? The free section of Medibuntu seems to include software released
under a free license that might not be appropriate such as hot-babe (explicit
content) and aacplusenc (a patent encumbered aac encoder).
Thanks. The reason it is under non-free is because of the problems concerning
libfaac0's license.
On a similar note, is Handbrake entirely free software? It uses the non-free
FAAC to encode AAC files. So it would probably need to be recomplied in order
to be added to Trisquel.
You might need to install updates if you aren't using Trisquel 4.5. I got my

Yeah I'm Israeli.
The journalists didn't lie - they just used headlines that suggest that
Stallman cancelled the talks due to pressure by the Palestinian who wish to
boycott Israel when in fact it is just an internal matter of funding. And
that unfortunately is what the public knows as
I got Netgear WG111v3 USB dongle. It works with Trisquel 4.0, but I didn't
test it on the live CD (it might only work with the installed version). I
actually used it in order to install updates which detected my internal
Atheros wireless adapter.
I got a generic external soundcard which has a USB connection which works.
Here is the lsusb output:

In Trisquel in the past I used Avidemux just fine. Perhaps converting audio
to .aac isn't possible but editing video files containing .aac audio without
re-encoding the audio stream should be possible. And certainly one can
convert videos to other formats using Avidemux, such as XviD video
I don't think there is a dependency on libfaac. Here is what I got when I
typed dpkg --info avidemux_2.5.2-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb (I downloaded the Debian
package from Ubuntu's website in the Lucid section as I'm using Trisquel
Taranis):
Depends: libatk1.0-0 (= 1.29.3), libavidemux0 (=
I will probably just use a USB webcamera that I have which has a built-in
microphone, but a dedicated USB microphone would of course be preferable.
Does anyone know of a microphone that uses a USB connection that works with
free software? I probably need one when using my netbook (EeePC 1001PX), as
the microphone shares a port with the headset. Should all microphones work
out-of-the-box or do some require non-free drivers?
Thanks but I don't want a phone. A dedicated player is better as it has
buttons that are optimized for music (such as iPod's wheel).
Thanks! I wrote the thread before going to bed and forgot to write an intro.
Just in case anyone is wondering the netbook EeePC 1001px satisfies all the
requirements I had other than 11, 12 and 15.
It works with 3D (Compiz was requirement number 10).
I tried to install Trisquel mini, but unfortunately after the installation
completed I couldn't use it as I received a grub error. I installed Ubuntu
8.04 using the free software only option which works slowly (the browser
Midori seems adequate). Is there a distro based on Ubuntu 8.04 that I
I got a cheap network adapter so I should be able to install Trisquel mini.
Thank you everyone for your help. I got the 1001PX netbook and everything
works :) I added it to h-node.
I don't know if Coreboot can be installed. As far as I know only the Lemote
YeeLong netbook supports a free bios. All the hardware though is fully
supported by free drivers.
It seems very similar in specs to this notebook which is fully supported, so
3D acceleration and wifi should work. The only different parts might be
bluetooth and webcamera:

I could obviously buy a network adapter, but I want to donate the computer
without needing to upgrade it first :)
Unfortunately, I am talking about the text mode in the live CD of Trisquel
mini. It tries to recognize a network adapter (or something similar) and then
after it doesn't find it it asks me to choose a repository which it can't
verify and thus it can't go to the next step. The graphic
Thanks but not all the videos on the site work using free software, for
example videos that are hosted on Veoh.com cannot be viewed (but can be
downloaded using UnPlug) and some videos also have region restrictions (e.g.
crackle.com).
Can you list the games you play that are free (as in freedom) with a short
description. I know very little about free games aside from the few I play on
my Openmoko phone such as QtMaze and perhaps a few classic games such as
gboggle (why this Boggle game is not included in any repository is
My laptop's wifi didn't work either, so I got a cheap Netgear USB adapter for
20 euros. Now wifi works great :)
I just came across this article:
http://linux.slashdot.org/story/11/03/26/0010258/100-Libre-Trisquel-45-STS-Slaine-Released
Unfortunately, it isn't written very well, so most of the people who added
comments had no idea what Trisquel is. Maybe fellow Slashdotters can add
comments to explain
When will the next version of gNewSense be released?
Thanks for replying. Here is a list of what I use that is in multiverse that
is free software:
Avidemux (great for trimming video)
SMplayer (relies on Mplayer but works fine with Trisquel's version of
Mplayer)
Gecko MediaPlayer (ditto)
Thanks but Hebrew keyboard is important to me.
The problem is with the online database freedb. Is there any way to tell an
audio player like Exaile to change the character encoding?
Thanks but I didn't want flash replacements for a change and just wanted to
watch videos using HTML5 which worked in the past.
Thanks. I sent a bug report. Let's hope it's fixed soon.
Is there any way to decode this audio format using free software? I have a
very old video which I downloaded from the internet which uses it. Here is
what MediaInfo gives regarding the audio (the video part works fine):
Format : RT29

I removed the directory /home/alonivtsan/.mozilla and reinstalled Web Browser
and HTML5 still doesn't work.
I should clarify: the phone only charges on a switched off computer if the
computer can turn on the light of a mouse connected to it (mine apparently
can).
The Openmoko isn't really a phone. It works to an extent as a phone but it's
more like a small tablet. Some of it's features I find to be really cool,
e.g:
1. You can use it without a SIM card at all. The distributions will complain
that no SIM is found but you can still use all the
If you want something stable Android on the Freerunner might be an option. I
didn't really like it (the fonts are tiny and setting it up with Hebrew
support was rather difficult) but it might actually be the most usable distro
on the phone.
I meant not needing to turn on Gnash and still getting video on Youtube was a
really nice feature :)
I just installed flashvideoreplacer and noticed that on Youtube it doesn't
work without Gnash. Linterna Magica on the other hand doesn't require Gnash
to work.
I agree. When I tell people I use Web Browser it's almost as bad as telling
them I use gNewSense (as it sounds like nuisance) :) I think one thing that
we should learn from Apple is that a catchy name is important.
Not to be off topic, but when I tell my bank that there site doesn't work
with my re-branded Mozilla browser (even though they claim Firefox works)
they have no idea what this means. I agree that Internet Explorer is pretty
weak as a name, however thankfully for Microsoft it comes with
Around 3-4 years. It might have already been bad for a while as I hardly ever
use the battery.
I'm having trouble with .OGV playback on my desktop computer running Trsiquel
4.0 (using the openchrome driver). Gnome-MPlayer shows lots of blocks, Totem
shows a distorted image and VLC shows a black screen. SMPlayer plays the
file, but it isn't included in the repositories (I installed it
OK my last question was silly as I can simply disconnect the battery and the
laptop still works.
To follow up: nv actually seems to work better on the laptop it seems for
video playback on Trisquel 4.0. Also, Totem and VLC can play the .OGV file
there as well, but Gnome-MPlayer still shows blocks. SMPlayer is the only one
that plays the file on both computers.
Now funnily enough Totem and VLC are willing to play the file on my desktop
computer. I guess they are simply buggy programmes. Gnome-MPlayer complains
about a missing VDPAU backend.
Actually Totem will only play the file properly if the file is already open
(paused) in another player.
My old integrated Microdia webcamera works out-of-the-box on Trisquel 4.0
(and also on 4.5). In the past I had to compile the driver manually or
couldn't get it to work at all. Perhaps it should be added to the FSF list of
supported webcameras, along with the version of the kernel which
This integrated webcamera works on my mum's laptop when I popped in Trisquel

I sent an email to hardw...@fsf.org about the two working cameras. Hopefully
this information will be added to their website.
Thank you for your reply. I will check it out.
Thanks. Will check it out.
Is there any way to use the old trash icon (which I prefer due to the paper
in the trash when it is full)?
Thanks, but searching locate trash gave a lot of results (e.g. every folder
in /usr/share/icons/elementary/places/ contains a trash icon). Is there a
simple way of installing the old trash or at least of getting a list of which
icons need to be replaced?
