A screenshot.
I'll do that.
I bought a "new" 10 year old Lenovo Thinkpad T-400 for $60. I love it but it
has an intel wifi card for which there is no non-proprietary firmware. I went
to the trouble of installing an atheros wifi card but unfortunately it wasn't
on the Thinkpad's "whitelist" and the computer wouldn't boot
Okay, I now understand why it was done that way, and I appreciate Trisquel's
concern with my privacy. But I really don't care if people know that I have a
1440x900 screen resolution. I can't see how that would negatively affect me.
Maybe I'll be targeted by people who are selling old computer
Thanks! That worked.
I just installed Trisquel and when I open it it comes up square. I readjust
it to how I want it, but when I close it and open it again it opens square.
Is there something in preferences that can make it remember its geometry when
it is closed?
tg3 enjoys bitching.
I'm sorry, you're right. What an idiot I am. Nevermind. I did install Dragora
also. I think it was the latest version which is now rather old. When's the
new one coming out?
Dragora, like Arch which it's based on, is a rolling release. They will
update installation images but there is never an official new version. I've
used it and I like it. If you like bleeding edge the Dragora will be good for
you. If you are looking to install it I recommend the Mate live ins
Very alpha. There are quite a few packages missing or uninstallable at this
point. I did install it and it ran.
I get all my wallpaper from google. I'll search, for example, "mountain
landscapes wallpapers" and go to the images. They'll be lots of mountain
wallpaper listed to browse through. Just search for the type of wallpaper you
want. Scifi, woodland, astronomical, whatever.
It includes an installer. It's still a little rough around the edges because
it's alpha but I'm running it now and it's usable.
I couldn't either. I downloaded it from the server.
So far the only problem I've had has been with the unavailability of some of
the dependencies for the gimp, so that it can't be installed. But I realize
that's because it's still in alpha. Mate is running great, and looks great.
It looks much better than gnome fallback. I'll probably keep it
No, I never use the wallpaper that comes with the distro. I have my own.
Here's that one:
I installed Flidas. Here's an early screenshot after I cleaned things up a
bit. I had to grab only part of the screen because at this point the gimp is
not installable so I couldn't reduce the image to get it under the 2 mb
limit.
I meant that the wallpaper was something I added. But here's a link for it.
We're all waiting with bated breath. Ruben has more time to work on it now,
so I hope not long.
...and the desktop wallpaper, of course.
You might notice in Ruben's post, Make Live Installer is listed as one of the
things needed to be done.
> $ sudo apt install gnome
Yeah, it's good to remember that you can install any desktop in the ubuntu
repositories. The mate desktop is just the showroom version.
No, no. I wasn't referring to your comment.
The best way I can think of to drive users away from free software projects
is to be obtuse and obnoxious when answering their simple questions.
If you're a slackware fan—and I am—I can recommend Freeslack:
http://freeslack.net/ They strip all the non-free bits out and use the
linux-libre kernel. Otherwise it's slackware. It's still in it's early
stages, but it's very usable.
I understand. I myself am a distro-hopper. I have inflicted more distro
installations on this poor old laptop than any computer should ever have to
endure. In that spirit I encourage you to try it out. The installation
process is the debian installation, except you're not given a choice of
I had updated the system before checking it too. Since I posted that I've
reinstalled Trisquel. Gnewsense has been plagued by out-of-date systems. It
took so long for Ucclia to come out too. Not to criticize another free
software project. But it makes me appreciate Trisquel.
If you are thinking of going to gnewsense because you think that the packages
will be newer, don't. I just installed it. It's based on Debian Wheezy, which
is the old stable version and all the packages are just as old. Gnome-shell
is 3.4. On Trisquel belenos it's 3.10. Iceweasel is 31.5, whi
I run old hardware and can't really tell the difference. That's one of the
beauties of running GNU/Linux. I'm not a gamer, and I love light window
managers. I run pekwm right now, and I love it.
I find it difficult to believe that the FSF fired somebody simply because he
or she was transgendered. There must be more to it than that.
As soon as the alpha comes out, I'm installing it.
I was thinking the same thing. The panel transparency is too good.
Personally, I was hoping for either XFCE or MATE. I like them both equally
well. He has to move to something permanent, and flashback isn't. And it has
to be something that doesn't demand compositing because Linux-libre doesn'
What's the desktop environment?
Stranger Things is definitely worth it. And Ruben deserves a break!
So is Ubuntu 14.04.
Most gnu/linux users are more interested in getting their hardware to work
than in using a totally libre distro.I was like that for the first few years
as a gnu/linux user, but now the kernel is so good at supporting hardware, I
have not problem. Libre is better.
How much money and/or effort have you put into this project? Consumers have
the right to bitch, people who get something for nothing because of the
efforts and sweat of others, don't.
I think you guys should stop whining. Ruben has a big job on his hands.

Here's the xml file on my computer, please show me where there's a reference
to the file that it currently displays on dmlight, which is called

Background file to use, either an image path or a color (e.g. #772953)
I did read that, but other than a reference to "draw-user-backgrounds"
there's no reference to where it would find the background. Why would it find
the xfce background but not the lxde background. Unless the instructions are
hidden somewhere in a binary file. I'm not looking how to control i
As I mentioned above, I did look for that file. It exists here:
/usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/50-unity-greeter.conf
and contains the following:
[SeatDefaults]
greeter-session=unity-greeter
That's all.
I also looked in every other file that contained the words "greeter" and
"conf". I use
The dynamic unity greeter grabs the background off of xfce, but not from
lxde. When I change the background in lxde and log out to lightdm, the
background of lightdm is whatever the background was in my last xfce session.
I googled this and at one time the info was held in a unity greeter con
I think I got a partial answer here:
http://www.webupd8.org/2012/01/lightdm-unity-greeter-update-brings.html
My question is where it stores the info for what to grab, if that makes any
sense.
And when I log out to lightdm again.
I log back in and change background.
Let me explain this more graphically. I took these pics of my screen rather
than using a screenshot because I don't know how to do screenshots of
lightdm. This is a pic of my desktop on xfce.
This is a pic when I log out to lightdm.
I wonder if somebody in-the-know could help me understand this. I have xfce
and pekwm installed on my Trisquel 7 machine. I originally installed the mini
version of Trisquel which comes with lightdm. When I change the desktop in
xfce, and log out to lightdm, the background for lightdm is the
Ratpoison is basically a gui version of Screen. You can get used to it, but
if you are consistent that will involve learning to use keyboard driven
browsers. You can still use the mouse, but why use ratpoison if you're going
to use the mouse for the apps you run in it? I've tried it a few tim
So anyway, nobody knows what the plans are for Trisquel 8 as far as desktop
environments are concerned?
The most configurable window manager out there. I used it once. I downloaded
a configuration file from some fvwm site and fiddled with it until I figured
out how to control the main features. It's addicting, but it took me a couple
of weeks to get things the way I wanted them. Then in the pro
It doesn't have to be intimidating and the new users, if they are
intimidated, don't have to utilize the configurability. It can be set up to
look and act just like gnome fallback. If you don't like it that way, then
you can learn to set it up the way you want.
You can make xfce look almost exactly like the traditional Trisquel Gnome
desktop. It looks a lot better than fallback. The panel can actually handle
transparency. The same is true of Mate, of course, but there are a few things
that I can't get Mate to do that are easy in XFCE.
I got it by googling "wallpaper" and looking at images. I can't find it now,
but I uploaded it to imgur. Here's the link. http://imgur.com/7qeGN2D
Sauron's personal desktop environment.
Here it is. I tried before and had a hard time.
I know there was a previous posting on this subject. But I was wondering what
the most recent plans are, since Trisquel 8 must be in development by now. My
personal preference is XFCE4 because it can be used without compositing and
is in active development and more configurable than Gnome fal
Thank you both for the responses. It worked.
I installed the mini version of Trisquel and then Xfce4, my preferred
desktop. Everything seems to be running fine except that I get this error
message whenever I boot into XFCE. The pop up dialog, "System Program Problem
Detected", gives me two options, "Cancel" and "Report", but no indicati
If your problem is with philosophy, Trisquel's philosophy has been different
from Ubuntu's right from the start. That hasn't changed Trisquel's ability to
use Ubuntu's free software architecture and make a truly free project. This
"alliance" with Windows doesn't do anything to change Ubuntu.
I have no problem running that application in wine.
I created a piece of free software for my own use before I had discovered
gnu/linux using Visual Basic. I still use that software. The only way I can
run it is through Wine, and it runs very well through Wine. Please don't make
me switch to a non-libre version of gnu/linux.
I've been using xfce since the last time I installed Trisquel a few months
ago. I had never taken the time to set it up the way I like it. This time I
did and it has everything I need. I set the window buttons applet up so that
all the windows from all the workspaces are available on the pane
Icecat is a GNUzilla project, not a Trisquel project. I doubt if it will
change to "Firefox" because the project will want to maintain its separate
identity as totally free of any connection to proprietary software.
XFCE, it's gtk and unlikely to branch off into something unrecognizable, like
gnome-shell did.
Thanks, I got it working.
I'm running Triskel (kde plasma desktop) but would like to use icedove email
client with it. It runs fine but grabs it's default browser from the gnome
default applications, apparently. The problem is that I can't get the gnome
default applications to list rekonq as an optional default browse
Since Triskel is no longer an installation option, what is the future of KDE
in the Trisquel family? I'm currently running it, and I'm wondering if I
should switch to Parabola for the future.
I don't like the mint menu. I guess I'm a traditionalist.
Here's a screenshot.
I'd add to the Mate installation page, but I can't seem to get the formatting
right. All the necessary info is in the above link.
I found it. The repository is for the new Ubuntu-Mate distro:
http://wiki.mate-desktop.org/download#ubuntu_1404_lts_trusty_thar
This page is a bit old: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/installing-mate . Is
there an update. I tried changing "precise" to "trusty" but that repository
doesn't exist.
I discovered what was wrong, and it was my fault. I had disabled
vertedgescroll in a .desktop file in ~/.config/autostart when using a
previous distro. I had forgotten about that. Everything works find now. Sorry
to waste your time and thanks for the responses.
Neither of those suggestions worked. In /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart
all the lines seem to begin with @. Should the extra line be "@synclient
vertedgescroll=1"?
I posted this yesterday, and for some reason it got deleted, or maybe I
didn't post it correctly. I'm using Trisquel 7.0 mini which uses LXDE. I want
to be able to scroll with the vertical edge motion. The option on synclient
is vertedgescroll which should be set to 1 instead of 0. It works f
Thanks for the info on viewtube. I hadn't heard of that one.

I don't think Fedora's Gnome classic is Gnome shell. It doesn't feel like
gnome shell. I've run gnome shell with all the extensions that make it look
like the traditional gnome, and that's definitely not it. I don't know what
it is, but I don't believe it's gnome shell.
My experience with Windows and proprietary software in general is different
than yours. I find gnu/linux much superior, and the few times I have
re-installed it on my laptop (win 7, just out of curiousity) I've filled in
the gaps with free software. Back when I used to run windows as my main
I've never been able to install gnewsense on my laptop. The installation
process always fails.
Fedora's Gnome release (21 beta) has an entry for "Gnome Classic" in it's
Display Manager menu, and it looks a lot like Trisquel's desktop.
What's the future of Gnome Classic? I googled it but couldn't get a good take
on recent plans.
An interesting CentOS desktop effort is Stella. I've been trying it off and
on for a couple of years now. It's amazing what's possible with such an old
kernel.
Yes, I've heard that many people use their computers to do things other than
installing distros. Curious...
Unfortunately this disorder I have isn't based on my newness to linux. I've
been a gnu/linux user since 2005. It's more a case of immaturity. I'm only 61
years old. Who knows, some day I might grow up. I used to be a Blag user,
back when Jeff Moe (Jebba) was running it. I think he got burned
As I noted in another post, I've been away (I'm a distro-hopper with a
tendency to rove), but I'm back, and I love the new release. Not enough
credit goes to the developers who not only bring the distro out, but make it
as easy as possible to get around without the use of non-free software. K
Well, at this point I'd just like to say that I've been away from Trisquel

The problem was that there was no entry in /usr/share/xsessions. Thanks.
Are you still using Gnome fallback (or classic)...
I've installed ratpoison on a newly installed trisquel-mini, but it doesn't
show up in the lxdm menu. I've googled this but I can't figure out how to do
it manually. Can someone help?
"However, the new version of Tor, 2.4, uses elliptical curve Diffie-Hellman

Just update your tor software.
You kind of missed the finer points of my post. And I recognize that this is
way off topic. But the brutality of the bolsheviks was started by the

supported by the United States government. It wasn't just fascists agains
What makes you think corporations don't kill people? They don't kill people

Well, be that as it may, it's still a good desktop experience. I hope it will
still be available whichever direction Trisquel heads.
I'm sorry, I hadn't investigated Elementary OS before I answered. I thought
you were looking for a light de. Elementary uses Gnome, so I would suppose it
wouldn't be difficult to set it up like Elementary does.
Did you ever hear of the White Terror? That was what engendered the Red
Terror. It was started by a Russian fascist named Kornilov. One of his
supporters was the U. S. Government. Just setting the record straight.
I agree that Corporations = Bad because they are basically sociopaths. And to
that extent Google is bad. The rest is troll.
