I have been interested in trying Trisquel, but I can't seem to get it to
work.
I have burned the "trisquel_6.0_amd64.iso" to a disc and checked its
integrity. When I boot it, I am presented with the Live CD menu, but when
choosing to try Trisquel, all I get is the blinking cursor (I left it
acpi=off will let me boot into the Live CD. I didn't think I'd be able to add
that to the GRUB thing after install since I couldn't boot, but duh, I should
be able to do that.
In the Live CD, my desktop isn't rendered correctly--the monitor is detected
as a "laptop" with the wrong resolutio
Well, I was able to use the "e" editing feature of GRUB to temporarily append
"acpi=off" to my Trisquel boot and get in. Resolution is still bad, but
everything else seemed to work. I could not, however, find anything named
"menu.lst" in the GRUB folder on any of my OS drives or the /boot par
Thanks, I'll give that a try tonight and see what comes of it!
Well, no dice. The change to the grub file makes no difference, even after
updating grub.
I keep having more problems. I tried to update the kernel to 3.8, went
through all the steps in the tutorial and everything seemed to go well, but I
still only have the option to boot into 3.2.
I als
Went back and checked to make sure it was there, and it was. Still can't get
into Trisquel without hitting "e" and manually adding "acpi=off" to the
second-to-last line provided.
Still can't get the kernel to update either. Everything connected to 3.10.7
is installed in synaptic (but there'
Some success! Though it didn't seem to work before, after I used another OS

another posting somewhere else), and after I used the "e" method to boot in
First, you all have been enormously helpful so far.
Doing some more experimentation, it seems that indeed it is
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX that needs "acpi=off" added to it. I may have had another
problem because it seems that Trisquel didn't want to load correctly if I
didn't use Trisquel's GRUB b
I have no idea what is and what is not useful in Xorg.0.log, but I'll put it

properly identify my monitor and the modes it supports, but it still loads a

I can now report complete success! Thank to your help and some
experimentation (and lots of reinstalls), I finally nailed down exactly what
I needed to do in order to get Trisquel to install and boot on my system with
no problems.

Thanks for simplifying that--I still consider myself a linux newbie, and go

I have two questions that I think might be related.
First, I have a HDD on which I store all of my data--my pictures, videos,
music, and the like. I'd like for this drive to be automatically mounted when
I boot Trisquel, and right now I've got it being mounted through a startup

Addendum: YouTube videos have the same response. So maybe this isn't a disc
problem.
Well, I haven't made any changes, but this morning, it all magically works...
I'll keep an eye on this if it happens again to try and figure out what
caused it.
Well, I'm stumped.
Every once in a great while, I'll boot up my system and all of my sound/video
stuff works. Most of the time, though, I don't get any sound at all after I
log in, and none of my media plays. The exception to this is YouTube. I
fought with Gnash, Lightspark, and GreaseMonke
I tried both Trisquel and gNewSense, but couldn't get gNewSense to work with
my video card and monitor resolution. Being able to get Trisquel to work was
what made the decision for me.
I had this exact same problem. I tried to get it to mount the manual way, but
in the end, I too ended up installing PySDM. I am glad it did--it is really
easy to manage drives with it, and since using it, I've had no problems with
my data drive automounting at startup. I highly recommend it.
I've been looking into photo-sharing services for a bit. I had considered
signing up for Flickr, as I like what I see in its sharing, licensing, and
community capabilities, but I really really do not want to have a Yahoo
account again. MediaGoblin looks like it could be a good alternative.
Thanks for the suggestion. Imgur isn't quite what I am looking for, however.
Just like the title says. Ever since upgrading to 6.0.1, Abrowser will
randomly freeze. It usually happens one or two times a day, so it's not very
often. I can't find any pattern to the freezing, whether it's videos,
pictures, certain websites. It seems to be completely random.

I've been using Trisquel on my main computer for a while now, and since the
first few bumps were ironed out with an updated kernel, it has run smoothly
and become my favorite OS.
At work, I ended up providing my own computer (long story). I had a 2003 Sony

I've used ThinkPenguin before, to get a new wireless card for my main

I've been fiddling around with the netinstall of Trisquel Mini, but
discovered a problem. Where the lxpanel should be is nothing but a light
grey, empty rectangle. There's nothing there and I can't interact with it in
any way.
This happens when I log in to the Trisquel Mini environment. If
Uninstalling and reinstalling the panel doesn't fix the problem, either.
That is helpful, since the other folders I thought would have files in them
didn't. Looks like both the LXDE and the Trisquel-Mini folders have config
and panel files, but looking at the Trisquel-mini one, I don't know enough to
see anything that might explain why the panel isn't showing up.
If I copy the "panels" folder (which holds one file, "panel") and "config"
file from /usr/share/lxpanel/profiles/LXDE to
/usr/share/lxpanel/profiles/Trisquel-mini or to
~/.config/lxpanel/profiles/Trisquel-mini, then I get a working panel in the
Trisquel-mini environment, albeit not the Tris
The custom design is overblown, anyway. There are one or two things I would

I have tried on multiple occassions to sign up for OpenMailbox, but each and
every time, after registering, I can't log in. I would love to use a service,
but it has to actually work for me.
What do you mean when you say it doesn't work with Windows? I've only got 7
running in a Virtual Machine to test it, but I have no problem with my
Windows/Trisquel 6 dual boot.
I believe when I had trouble during one of my installs (my first few were
awful messes), but as I learned my way around, what helped was this:
1) Install Trisquel using manual partitioning (for some reason I always feel
better doing it that way).
2) Once installed, reboot back into the Live
I posted what worked for me in that thread. Maybe it will work for you, too.
Did you use Boot Repair as its own disk, or did you run it from within the
Trisquel Live-CD? I had a few issues before when trying to run it as its own
live CD. Also, did you have both the Trisquel file system and the Windows
file system mounted? If they aren't mounted, Boot Repair may not de
You are free to install any add-on you want in your browser. But Trisquel,
being an operating system dedicated to free software, won't make it available
to you by default if it isn't free software. You have to find and install it
yourself.
Don't know if it's the same in 7 (I'm waiting for everything to be in place
before I download it), but in six, if you go to Menu -> Places -> Recent

I think the front page of the new website is excellent!
However, I encounter problems when I got to any other page, like the forums,
downloads, or documentation. My Trisquel-mini computer is an old one that
runs at a 1024x768 screen resolution, and at that size, that website pages

For some reason, on Midori in Trisquel 7, it's not as bad (I had written the
comment while downloading that ISO and using Trisquel 6). No idea that that
is.
I also question the pink bar at the top of the page. I understand that it's
the very top of the background used on the pages, but as
I too cannot get the clock to switch.
I have the same problem, both on my main desktop running Trisquel 7 (with a
NVIDIA GTX 560 Ti) and on my office computer (an old Sony Vaio
desktop/monitor all-in-one machine) running Trisquel 7 Mini. Everything is
just sluggish. I don't have Compiz, though.
Huh. Interesting. Is there anyway to switch back to a Fallback mode? I
usually don't mind performance hits, but this is very noticeable.
Would I have to replace it with something?
I purged nouveau and restarted, and the results are MUCH better. I notice
that there are a few "flourishes" missing, such as my main menu not being
semi-transparent, and some "animated" effects, but I hardly notice them, and
everything else is now MUCH more responsive. Since my monitor is hoo
Abrowser is Firefox without the Firefox branding. Firefox's branding

OpenMailbox would be great, if it worked. I have tried on three occasions to
sign up for and use OpenMailbox, and have yet to succeed.
Once I found GreaseMonkey and ViewTube, I never looked back. It even plays
Facebook videos (if you open the video's link in a new tab--it doesn't work
in the "popup" view).
First off, on my home and office computers, I downgraded and reinstalled
Trisquel 6. In a few months, I'll give Trisquel 7 another try, and hope that
some of the bugs are worked out (some things did not work well on my home
computer, and Trisquel 7 Mini was unusable on my office computer).
That's about the search box up near the address bar. I'm talking about the
boxes on about:home and about:abrowser.
I didn't mean the Start Page search engine. I meant the Abrowser start page,
both about:home and about:abrowser (although the second one no longer works
for me... hmm).
I'm not sure what help I hope to get, as I really don't know much about my
problem.
A while ago, after struggling to get it working, I finally got VirtualBox

I have heard people mention gnome-boxes, and I would LOVE to give it a try.
But it doesn't seem to be in the 6.0.1 repos. How can I get it?
I'd read about SPICE, but when I tried it, it didn't work. Your explanation
tells me why, though, thank you.
I'll keep experimenting with video modes and see if something works better.
Because I messed around with trying to get things to work, my

Yep, that's why I'm trying to use something different. But ecause I'm still
using Trisquel 6.0.1, I still have VirtualBox, since (from my understanding),
the version of VirtualBox in 6.0.1 is NOT the version that needs the non-free

I bought a X200 right around the time of the meltdown between MiniFree and

I didn't have any trouble at all reinstalling Trisquel on my x200. I did have
