I've got the opposite experience, when tried RBDoom3BFG, and Dante on Trisquel. The compilation process of the BFG port went pretty smoothly, and the game worked just fine (except that the audio was a little choppy in menu), but this wasn't the case with Dante, which was a complete mess. I

S3TC is a patented texture compression technology, and for this reason, it cannot be included within Mesa by default (common problem with Intel graphic drivers). Nevertheless, this can be easily fixed by installing libtxc-dxtn0 (not required if you are using the Intel Linux Graphics

It's completely free (patent encumbered does not mean proprietary). You should read these Phoronix articles here, and here, to better understand the situation. There are also Wikipedia articles about S3TC, and S2TC, which is likely to be long-term solution to this problem.
