When installing Trisquel, I find that if I begin installing from a live
session, Orca does not always work. However, if when booting I install Trisquel
directly by selecting "Install Trisquel" instead of "Try Trisquel without
Installing" Orca is always enabled after installing.

I meant to write how to *disable* Orca.

I think it better have to have assistive technologies enabled by default than
disabled, but this seems to be a very common question. I can think of a few
possible solutions
- have a separate ISO with which assistive technologies are enabled by default
during and after installation
- have an

Aha! That did it, and is a much better solution than having to kill the
process every time I reboot. Thanks for this!

I have seen this happen. Orca is buggy.
Last time I installed T8 Orca misbehaved as usual. I couln't turn it off
easily no matter what I did. Then I uninstalled it.

Thanks Dave, that was what I needed, a "killall -9 speech-dispatcher"
command. I
You can stop and disable screen reader in the Universal Access page on
Control Center, or just toggle it with 'alt+super+s'. You should also kill
all the speech-dispatcher processes that orca launches. When you mute
speech-dispatcher, it's still running. At any time, you can restart orca,

Funnily enough, that was the first thing I tried, even before muting Orca,
when I first installed Trisquel v8.0 on my machine. Unfortunately, even with
these options disabled (as shown in the attached
Hi all, does anybody know what is going on here? I muted the Orca screen
reader from the outset, because I don't need it myself, but I didn't
uninstall it, as I figured it would be good to be able to demonstrate that
particular functionality when I show off my Trisquel v8.0 installation to

My friend has been tasked with making Sugar learning environment accessible,
by means of the Orca screen reader, on a OLPC machine. I tried running orca

I started the Onboard on-screen-keyboard a few weeks ago. I played with it
for a little while, and then turned it off. It still appears at the log-in
screen. It doesn't appear after I log in.
I don't mind that Onboard appears at the log-in screen. But I don't think
that it should
Orca starting When Trisquel starts is not a bug or problem; turn off or
remove orca if you find it disruptive.
Those who need orca cannot easily install it, nor can they use a live system
without it. To me, no orca is a black screen. Orca can be easily removed
or deactivated. This said, we may be able to build the production Trisquel 7
without the automatic startup of orca on the live system,
I'm not sure if a new build was released or if I'm doing something dumb but
I downloaded a fresh copy of the Trisquel desktop installer and it's plagued
with Orca screen reader. It shows up during the installer, on the login
screen, and after logging in.
Is this user error or an issue
I believe Orca is activated if you leave the welcome screen alone right after
booting for some time. (30 secs or so)
I didn't had that problem when installing Trisquel 6.0, but when I decided to
install Trisquel 6.1, Orca suddenly appeared (both during the install and
after). If you don't need Orca, then just uninstall it.
I do not know why there is Orca. Im sure more time is spent uninstalling it
than people who need it would have to spend installing it.
Being blind on a system that you're not familiar with which doesn't help the
blind probably makes using it for anything difficult, and that includes
installing packages and installing the OS itself in the first place. Not
being blind and closing Orca (you don't need to uninstall it) is a far
I'm sure the people who need it would disagree. Uninstalling for people who
don't takes a few seconds. Accessibility is an important feature.
Hi,
I did a full install of the subject beta, and am trying to use the
applications as provided in the disk image and repositories. When I
launch any of the libreoffice aplications, orca speaks while the app is
loading. Once the app's window has focus, orca is silent, until I
