Yeah, Mangy, you can do that manually or you can install a distro that takes
care of it, as it should.
How about this? Have you received an update for this?

The problem is that my brain was used to getting things easy. Probably they
wanted to keep things easy for the user, so that he doesn't ask questions

I'm still using trisquel 6 and love it.
It's still getting updates, both from Trisquel project, and from upstream.

I did not say updates, I said **timely security updates**. Trisquaello not
receiving those updates is a very well known fact here. There's no need to
use the OS to be aware of it, especially if you visit

@SuperTramp83: I've noticed that sometimes in Trisquel 7 the key strokes are

Trisquel 6 and 7 are bad but trisquel 8 might be worth something, not sure.
I either respectfully disagree with Supertramp83 or agree with him

I love Trisquel 6 as well, and yes, I do still use it. I just make sure to
either unplug my modem before I boot into it or double check to make sure
that there are no wireless USB adaptors or ethernet cables
>What are you thoughts about this ?
My thought are: you shouldn't use a distro that doesn't provide timely
security updates (both 6 and 7 are bad in this regard) IF security and
privacy of your system and the data on such system is your priority.
You say 6 runs better? How better? Faster?

I used the comments of Magic Banana, ssdclickofdeath, and lembas. (I

I tried it again today. The file displayed upon executing the sed command.
I did not see any occurences of the string '--unrestricted'.
This time, I did not execute the command update-grub. Instead, I tried to

I was able to get it working by removing the --unrestricted parameter from
the kernel on the top of the grub edit boot screen (press E to access it,)

Run sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade

Thanks Magic Banana. I entered all five of the commands you listed above.
They all seemed to execute OK.
What command(s) do I enter in order to get back to my live CD, and then

Hello Magic Banana. I appreciate your assistance.
First I altered the BIOS to boot first from the CD/DVD drive. (I made the
default first boot media the 2nd boot media.)
Here is what I tried tonight, from a terminal window in Trisquel 6 live cd
(try trisquel option):
trisquel@trisquel:~$
Is sda1 really the root partition of the installed system (i.e., the
partition mounted at /)? If yes, then that command was OK:

You can then execute the following command to mount the virtual filesystems
(although I am not sure it is that essential):

I fixed my problem by using chroot from a live CD and making an upgrade of my
system followed by update-grub.
I would appreciate it if we could get an official set of detailed
instructions for fixing this problem. Instructions that someone with only a
very limited amount of technical experience with text commands could
understand and follow. and, the sooner, the better. Thanks.

I forgot to run a software upgrade after booting, that's why it didn't work.
I feel so stupid. :P
Since the last update of my Trisquel 6 distribution, I get the following

the linux version in the grub menu):

I couldn't find any '--unrestricted' parameter in

to change some config file as my differed from what was in the package and I

I was shown the grub menu unlike before.
Also you should be able to do it from grub itself, with the edit option, as
long as you know the grub password. If you don't you can read it with a
similar procedure, using a live cd mount / and read ./boot/grub/grub.cfg (but
if you are already doing that you could as well remove the
With a live cd, mount your / partition and edit ./boot/grub/grub.cfg to
remove the '--unrestricted' parameters. Then you should be able to reboot and
update grub. Excuse the inconvenience.
Works for me. (perhaps your CD is corrupted)
Once my LiveCD loaded, I used these commands:
sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt[my / partition is on sda5, yours may
differ]
gksudo gedit /mnt/boot/grub/grub.cfg
and i use find and replace to delete all the instaces of --unrestricted.

Hello everyone,
Now that Trisquel 7 came out where I can download the 6.0 release?
Hi!
You can still download it at this address:
http://mirror.fsf.org/trisquel-images/.
http://cdimage.trisquel.info/trisquel-images/
that was quick! thanks guys
trisquel 6 guest virtualbox 4.3.18 There is no full screen option?
Have you checked Displays in the System settings? You can turn off the
mirroring there. I have two monitors and that solved the problem.
Yeah I have. The checkbox for mirroring is unchecked and faded out, it only
shows one monitor, and the detect dispays button does nothing.
Tried to run 'xrandr' in a terminal? It should show all available displays.
What kind of a video card?
Are you running the latest kernel and x?
https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/installing-latest-backported-kernel-and-xserver
@lembas the video card is a Intel® HD Graphics 4600 (the laptop is Think
Penguin Snares). Updating X did it! Thanks so much, it works perfectly now.
Glad to hear that, enjoy!
Hi all,
Trisquel on My laptop will only recognize one monitor at a time. If I plug in
the monitior when the laptop is already on, it mirrors at the resoluton of
the built in panel. If I restart the laptop with the monitor plugged in it
mirrors at the resolution of the external monitor.
TRIM works smoothly in Trisquel 6.
Tested with Crucial M4 and M500 SSDs.
You can check by: sudo hdparm -I /dev/sda | grep TRIM
You will see: Data Set Management TRIM supported
I have a Radeon 9550 that worked fine with Trisquel 4.0 and Ubuntu 12.04 out
of the box, but now its blacklisted in 6? Radeon is also deblobbled from the
kernels as well.
I thought there were free drivers/firmware for these ATI cards. If there is,
how can I restore them?
The driver is xserver-xorg-video-radeon. Not sure about the firmware.
Well, the unfortunate fix is to install the FOSS driver
(xserver-xorg-video-radeon) and the nonfree firmware. I got this information
from the Debian IRC. They don't seem to be concerned that the firmware is not
free.
For whatever reason, the AMD firmware is in the blobs section of the
I think that in Trisquel 6 by default radeon is blacklisted, which I find a
surprising choice.
You can add a # in front of the blacklist line in
/etc/modprobe.d/disable-radeon.conf and then update-initramfs -u. (Both these
actions need to be done as root or using sudo.) Then reboot.
That
Are there any FOSS drivers that I can use to correct this issue?
Also- the Mini edition of trisquel still has all of the lubuntu logos and
trademarks everywhere.
Welcome to freedom! Enjoy your stay!
And should any issues crop up, we'll gladly try to help you.
I just want to post my gratitude and thanks to the developers of this Linux
distro.
For me, on my notebook (amilo pa 2548), it worked out of the box(!).
I've been struggling for the past two-three weeks (when I decided to leave

I'd probably try to install once more.

The solution was to switch to Metacity instead of the default Compiz. I had

Too bad there isn't a way to see how many of those downloaders are using
Trisquel.
Or perhaps its a good thing, if you know what I mean!
I am using Trisquel 6.0 with an SSD. A copy of my /etc/fstab is attached as
/tmp/fstab.txt. You will see that the SSD has the options noatime, discard.
So far as I know, this ensures that the SSD will not be written to
unnecessarily. The TRIM function is provided by the discard option.

I'm pretty sure it does. The main difference between the mainline kernel and
linux-libre is the later is missing the non-free parts. There are also some
patches applied. None of which would be impacted by this.
Welcome to the forums and to Trisquel!
I agree with Chris.

Hello, I removed the multiarch file, did apt-get update, apt-get upgrade.
Then I tried do-release-upgrade, but I could not get the upgrade to toutatis
(trisquel 6.0). I saw this comment in Spanish:
When will it be available again?
Ok, I just sent you the address. I have a few last questions:
When should I expect the package to arrive?
How will I be contacted when the package arrive?
Thank you again.
You misunderstood me. I meant TP as ThinkPenguin, not as Trisquel Project.
You probably heard about the FSF hardware certification program (you can find
more details here) and these wireless USB adapters will also fall under this
category (at least not officialy yet).
On Slashdot a few days ago as well:
http://linux.slashdot.org/story/13/03/13/006/trisquel-60-toutatis-is-now-available
It will probably be a bit longer than I thought. There is more of a process
than I realized. It *should pass* with flying colors though and they have
been kept aware of the progress. I'm handing over some adapters tomorrow at
the North East GNU/Linux Fest since John Josh (from the FSF) will
Oh! OK. :-)
Sorry for the confusion.
How do you normally receive postal mail? It varies from country to country
although if they don't delivery daily you may get a call. There isn't any
signature required. It should take about a week in theory although customs,
slow/inefficient postal/etc could mean anything from a slight delay
Debian won't include the firmware in its main repository or on the install
CDs. It should go into a package with the carl9170 firmware eventually.
Not sure what your asking. There is no need to return it. Your testing has
helped. These are not exactly exspensive parts. It's the entire time
You hit it on the money. It isn't critical to have multiple editions to
fulfill the objectives of the distribution. Its that simple. Anything else is
just eating away at resources that don't exist.
It's not wrong to work on this. I'd just rather not see it eat into resources

Just to be clear: the whole Trisquel project (including every image and every
package in its repository) is FSF approved. The FSF image, i.e. the image
distributed by the FSF during the events it organizes, basically is the i18n
image + a few applications, in particular for artistic creation
Chris, I'm not sure I get the gist of your argument. I'm using trisquel 6 net
installer (bare bones) and using synaptic to install the
programs/applications, surely this doesn't 'eat into resources'?.
Then of course there is the argument that this is 'free' and we can use it as
we wish ?
Thanks!
We are moving forward with FSF certification too. Going to be handing over a
few of the cards to John or Josh @ the North East GNU/Linux Fest.

Here we go:

It took a little more time than I thought, but it's ready now. This is just a
concept driver, but it should work out-of-the-box, no restart required. Just
plug in the dongle, install the driver (see README for details), and wait a

No. That would be taking it too far. I'm just saying that the distribution
shouldn't be directionless. If the objective is a usable free distribution
for the masses (which I think is a fair description) having multiple desktop
environments needs to take a backseat to more pressing issues.
