Suggestion: have a quirk in the update-manager code that checks
whether linux and linux-image were installed before the upgrade, and if
so, either refuses to remove them or installs them back.
However, should the dependencies of linux and linux-image be such that
they pull in the -generic kernels
Now that I think of it, update-manager (at least in jaunty) does show all the
updates for the current distro release,
even when it shows the button to do a dist-upgrade. I think part of this bug is
thus fixed now.
Since jaunty, we also don't have the new updates available notifier in

plugins enabled (which surprised me), one for BBC, one for Youtube. With
just Youtube, I don't get the bug. With just BBC I do, so I assume the

if this is worth doing I'd rather use a more generic heuristic (package
no longer available, user hasn't used the program for a long time)

(gnome-session is merely a guess at the right package.)
My desktop machine, which runs karmic (and is up to date as of about
half an hour ago), won't let any account except my own log in. I created
a brand new account (tomjon), and

A gnome-session --debug log. I made this by this:
- log in using the xterm session
- this opened a single xterm window
- gnome-session --debug 21 | tee gnome-session-debug.log
- this killed X again
