You are probably right about the misconfiguration of
/etc/grub.d/windows. My Dell Studio XPS is configured for dual boot to
Microsoft Windows 7. If I want to boot to Windows, I press the Shift
key which brings up the menu and lets me choose Windows - if I do
nothing, it boots into Ubuntu Linux.
Is there any news on this issue? There is a bugfix upstream, so surely
this shouldn't be too hard to ship?!?

The workaround seems to work! File synchronization is still running, as
it has to keep up with all the accumulated changes, but as far as I can
tell synchronization works now.

I can reproduce this - or similar by doing the following - have firefox
open, open thunderbird from the top right panel mail entry. Minimize
thunderbird, click on thunderbird icon to maximize thunderbird, a click
on the title bar pushes thunderbird to the bottom of the window stack
