I attached a little script to this bug-report, that will delete all the

I've fixed the problem I had - at least I think so. After an extremely
frustrating day with an unusable machine (dual-processor, Acer desktop).
System / Preferences / CompizConfig Settings Manager / OpenGL
and then un-tick Sync To VBlank.
My machine came back to life. What a relief.

I have exactly the same problem, hardware is:
Intel i5 chipset with
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
using a fully patched Ubuntu 11.04. This bug happens to me both, when
using metacity (so the 'no effects') and compiz.
I have exactly the same problem, and i'm not on a virtualized machine but
instead normal machine:
Intel i5 chipset with default drivers, nothing special. Directly after login to
my user 'dominik', the theme is how it should be and the following processes
run:
$ ps aux | grep sett
gdm
The login screen's picture will be read from ~/.face, so the file will
obviously be created...
(Same problem here, by the way).

Is there a chance to escalate this?
On productional server systems the need for an automatic kernel crash dump is
IMO a must have. Enterprise grade Linux distributions like SLES and RHEL have
this ready and working. What about the LTS Ubuntu-Server system? Isn't this
targeted for enterprise?
1. I got the same problem when trying to eject disk (Optiarc DVD RW AD-
