Make sure you're using high quality (TTF) fonts, for example Bitstream, DejaVu
or Microsoft fonts (msttcorefonts-package).
In some cases it's better to choose Autohinter instead of native, you have

A black full screen appears of unusual form and takes all the resolution

I have a gutsy chroot on my amd64 feisty system.
gcc-4.2 (and gcc-snapshot) both fail to compile one of my source files
when -g and -O3 are both used. The code that it chokes on is very
small. It's not preprocessed because it doesn't #include

The same issue affects edgy i386. I have three of them as the
cpqd.com.br domain MXs. It seems that when /etc/network/if-up.d/sendmail
is called it cannot resolve the reverse of the host's IP address and
that strange string ends up being inserted in /etc/mail/m4/dialup.m4.

I was following the instructions in

I'm running dapper i386, and did apt-get update first.
Here are the results of running the first apt-get install listed there:
$ sudo apt-get install krb5-kdc

Point understood (although bear in mind that if we do find a solution to the
crashing all 3D calculations will be run on your CPU and may be extremely
slow). It would be useful to see the left over Xorg.0.old log (assuming you
start X again) that is left over after a crash. Speculatively

Just following up on this bug. Does this crash still occur reproducibly
or has it been fixed in more recent updates? If so what are the steps to
reproduce it, i.e. were you installing specific packages at the time or
anything distinctive?

I have the same problem.
I hadn't noticed that before, only if xine crashes with ac3 sound.
Before I could get PCM sound from digital out using alsactl restore.
It seems that when I tested few seconds the mixer can still produce PCM
through digital out after watching movie with AC3 sound.
