No, this is not printed. And in fact, ctrl-D won't reboot, either.
There is really, really no way to properly reboot at this stage.
reboot -f is _not_ a proper workaround, since it will not umount/sync
filesystems properly.

one is intl gma965 and the other one an intel X3100
both run hardy but i observed it in gutsy too, so I turned it off back then.

THanks, I have tried but no way: still going to low resolution. But it
did something more: It set the card to a mode so that when I removed the
.conf and re-logged in, it was still in low resolution mode. I had to
power-off the pc to get back to high resolution with no .conf.

I have the same problem. If I plug in an external HD, kded goes to 100%
CPU consumption. Sometimes, even without an external disk or USB, kded
will also go to 100% and stay there.

KDE does not strive to be like Windows, it just tries to be a good desktop
environment.
And there are 2 menus available in KDE4, Application Launcher and
Application Launcher Menu, use the Application Launcher Menu if you don't
like the default.

Unfortunately booting with mem=256M doesn't change anything.

BTW: I filed this against initramfs-tools as I wasn't sure whether it
was due to the size of the generated initrd or whether it is a kernel
