Hi,
I replaced my Sony laptop (because of a hardware failure - not Kubuntu), so I
can't help with this problem any more.
I'm now running Intrepid on an Acer Aspire and it works fine. But it doesn't
have an ATI Radeon graphics card, so I wouldn't expect to see the same
problem.

today i upgraded from intrepid to jaunty and i too seem to be having the same
problem i get the from the cpufreq panel applet that my cpu is set at 300 mhz
and hence causes a lot of unresponsiveness
Setting importance is a problem; only a restricted set of users may set
it.
I believe this bug may be effecting me as well. It seems to thrash the
system for around 5 min, and then I'm left with a bazillion sleeping
processes.

I can confirm that bug.
Same version, same bug, same fix.
But there is one strange thing:
when using the original mpd.conf with
bind_to_address set to "localhost",
even thought mpd does not install properly, it starts up well on system
startup. Only when restarting it by "/etc/init.d/mpd restart"
it also happens to me, from a few day. We can say it's not a real
fullscreen mode, it seems not consider the title bar of firefox, my top
gnome panel, e my botton avant window navigator dock.
If i manually set fullscreen with F11, and manually unset fullscreen it
comes back rightly...

I decided to see what happens with a normal install of ubuntu (8.10), with no
patches.
I installed the nvidia-180-modaliases and had the Restricted Drivers Manager
give me the nvidia 180 driver option.
After that was done, I rebooted and the login prompt appears.
I get the plain brown background
Hi I'm using Intrepid Ibex and I ran into this issue with my Asus laptop having
a SiS191 Gigabit Ethernet card.
I installed the kernel from Jaunty which solved the issue for me. Kernel
version 2.6.28-8 to be precise.
