Anything showing up in /var/log/syslog when you try to start samba
manually (sudo /etc/init.d/samba start) ?
Try purging to see if it goes better:
$ sudo cp /etc/samba/smb.conf ~/smb.conf.backup
$ sudo apt-get purge samba-common samba
$ sudo apt-get install samba
Does samba start ? If yes:
$ sudo
Try using the ppa-purge tool Iago used to purge the openshot ppa.
