This is a bug report and all I tried to do is to make a Hypothesis of its

Exactly, I'm suggesting to clean install. However, I'm not pretty sure of the
results. All I said is a just hypothesis of the problem being related to the
Jaunty-Karmic update process.
And I was trying to confirm my hypothesis by asking all the affected ppl

**Just to clear things up:
The problem seems to be related to the update process from Jaunty to Karmic and
not Karmic itself. As when I made a clean install for Karmic, the problem
completely disappeared.
[Conclusion:- As a workaround, you can try a clean install from scratch]

I don't think Caspar Mierau meant that u change ur proxy settings as an
administrator ...
All is meant is to change the Pager Port in Pidgin itself the default one is
5050, which in ur case is not working,
SO change it to one of those 20,23,25,80,119,8001,8002
(from AccountsMange Accounts
Just a small thing to add:
I used to have the same problem with Pidgin 2.5.5 (Ubuntu Hardy 8.04) for some
unknown reason and when i changed the Pager port it worked well (i used 20 and
119 and both worked)
