While I totally understand the need to localise the Greeter and
appreciate the work that's going towards it – I'm afraid in this
particular case I have to disagree (this is after consulting another
Hebrew speaker in the design team).
One of the main design memes of the Unity Greeter is that it

I don't seem to be affected by this. The sound setting is carried over
from login to desktop and vice versa – all fine. That works through
login/logout, restart and switching user.

I looked into this by wireframing a Change Password type of a user

Please have a look at the attached PDF – if you open it in a proper

It's consistent with the login box and as such also with the current
Unity Greeter design scheme.

Out of curiosity, looked into how Mac OS X Lion handles long names and
it turned out that they're rather inconsistent…

As for enlarging the login box dynamically… We've had a very
reductionist apporach to the login experience. Minimalistic layout,
alignment with Unity, no user pictures. There's richness to the
behaviour though – the login carousel moves vertically, in other words,
it's all on rails and very
Yep, if short name means username then as a technical detail it
shouldn't be exposed. I thought short name is something like a person's
own policy on their name.

Thanks for your insight Chris, very useful!
Sorry I misunderstood your surname with middle names. That highlights
the fact that in in general we have a number of people with double
surnames (like Rhys Jones, Kamstrup Erlandsen, García Rodríguez)
depending on language and culture.
Shortname is
I think asterisks were used instead of bullets for aesthetic reasons –
i.e. to leverage the delicacy of the Ubuntu font. However, if that
strongly conflicts with an established pattern and is inconsistent with
anything else, we can revert to bullets for sure.

Right, this is an interesting bug to resolve!
Depending on the width of the login box there's a limit on how many
characters we can display in the name field. Thus, some sort of
truncation and/or abbreviation mechanism is needed.
Chris, how would you prefer your name to be treated in such case?
