The actual problem was that the grub update does not put the karmic kernel into
menu.lst, so I was still on the jaunty kernel.
With 2.6.31-14-generic it works perfectly.

this is a very good question. I remember that during the upgrade I was
asked twice about keeping or replacing the menu.lst. I clicked replace
the first time and keep the second time because I assumed that the new
one was there and should not be tampered with anymore.

1) Running the command from the Alt+F2-run-box works just fine. So it is
a timing issue.
2) Using the shell script with sleep fixes the background texture
problem.
BUT: It seems like the start scripts are not run parallel, but one after the

Since I only have Clearlooks in /usr/share/themes, not in ~/.themes, I'm sure
this is no custom version.
My hardy was upgraded from gutsy and edgy. Maybe that's important, too.
