The position_fix value is a part of the line you added:
snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=6stack
Although this deals with DMA pointers and shouldn't be the cause of your
problem.
Take a look at the ALSA Documentation info for your chipset:

Fixed!
Try editing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base as root (i.e. sudo gedit
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base) and adding the following to the end of the
file:
options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack
Then restart the system (restarting alsa wasn't enough for me).

Microphone does not

I had now lost all sound
so
deleted added line and
now have sound
but no microphone again all as before

Hi, just curious if you solved this problem.
I'm using Gutsy and get only a hiss from the microphone, instead of the actual
capture. I've checked all mixer settings (mute, capture select and the like).

I confirm this behavior.
Currently running Ubuntu Gutsy (7.10, amd64) on ASUS P5NSLI, Intel Core 2 Duo
E6420, 2GB RAM.
I've tried all settings in Volume Control, alsamixer, alsamixergui and qamix,
and have also attempted to change settings in /etc/esound/esd.conf.
Still no microphone output,

I also encountered this behavior.
Azureus crashes if I double-click a torrent being downloaded, or if I
choose Show Details from the right-click menu.

Update (probably unimportant):
When the transfer is complete, Show Details still causes Azureus to crash,
whlie Open File/Show File are unresponsive (i.e. nothing happens).
