Hi,
I had the same problem with no logout sound after upgrading from Feisty
to Gutsy.
I've first been surprised by the Unistallation package window, which
appears just before starting the upgrade. The package "esound" was
listed as being uninstalled during the upgrade.
After the upgrade to Gutsy
The original system was Feisty. I followed the Update Manager so as to
upgrade to Gusty. Everything works well, except there's no logout sound
when I logout from the GNOME desktop, which previously worked fine in
Feisty.

Identical problem here...using Gutsy final 7.10..log-in sound (drum-
roll) works perfectly but no logout sound despite selecting in sound
prefs and the sound playing there when play button pressed...this is an
annoying bug and leaves an unpolished feel which will be noticed by new
users

This is weird, but gnome panel version 1:2.20.0.1-0ubuntu6 seems to cure
the bug.
I applied the update, close gnome and restart it. When new session was
opened both panel are shown flawlessly. Maybe somebody who applied this
patch and restart the computer can confirm what I am seeing ?

In fact there are two control panels:
gdmsetup = Login Window
gnome-sound-properties = Sound
Both allow to adjust the sounds. However, they are not synchroized and
they do not update gdm.conf in a consistent way.
Using gdmsetup I get the logon sound but no sound for the ready prompt (used to
be
gdmsetup edits the gdm.conf-custom configuration

I try to enable the start splash screen and it kills the playing of
question.wav file on login screen (see comment #28 by afonic).
It is a very annoying and weird bug. I will try to see if adding
starting sound in accessibility tab can make it be played or not.
Anyway, shutdown sound is not played

Hmmm, strangely enough I sometimes DO get the ready-to-login drumroll
sound now. Sometimes, not always. Just like I sometimes have to kill
bonobo-activation-server to get Nautilus to run (bug #90923:

these two are related?

When Ubuntu dropped Enlightenment Sound there were lots of holes left
over and this is one of them.
Has the GDM sound been fixed yet? That should be an easy fix since the

I've tested the new gnome-session patch attached to the upstream bug but
so far it hasn't produced sound, and it seems to lose the Ubuntu
enhanced log-out dialog.
However, with standard Gutsy gnome-session 2.19.92 the sound *is*
played if Accessible Login sound is set:

When I boot up ubuntu and reach the login screen, instead of the usual
noise I get when it prompts you to enter in a username and password I
get a system beep. When
Sounds do not work due to the removal of Gnome splash screen.
Enable splash screen (in Configuration Editor, apps -> gnome-session ->
enable show splash screen) and the sounds should work.

Ubuntu 7.10 Alternative Tribe 5.
1. GDM ready sound is not playing. As he suggested,
System->Administration->Login Window->Accessibility and choosing a
sound (question.wav) results in it working.

I neglected to mention in the previous comment about how to use gnome-
session v2.18.0 that it will cause some functionality to be lost; such
as access to the Suspend & Hibernate options and some of the new
Accessibility / Assistive Technology functionality.
