So, the only way to get rid of the bug is to do a massive update from
8.0.4 to 9.0.x ?

This seems fixed for me since I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04, with Evolution

I confirm this problem with 8.04 and previously with Gutsy also. I have
Nvidia card and Compiz enabled. Presumably the reason 8.10 clears this
problem is precisely because there is no Nvidia driver?

Ubuntu 8.04.2 (all latest updates installed) still has this problem, and since
there is no NVIDIA driver for Ubuntu 8.10 (at least I always get this message
when I try to install), a bug fix in 8.10 does not help at all!
Please note that this problem ONLY occurred with the NVIDIA driver and
Hello,
I was checking this problem thoroughly, and it looks to be resolved.
Evolution seems to work properly.
Thanks a lot :)

Unfortunately, when I try to update to 8.10, I get the message, that no
NVIDIA-driver for this version is available, so I of course I will not install
this version!
So please allow me the stupid question:
Since the bug occurs only with the NVIDIA driver, what does it mean that it
has been fixed
This issue was resolved upon 8.10 installation and subsequent updates.
Is it still occurring in the new version of Ubuntu? It may have been
fixed by accident.

I have the same or a similar problem. It is most evident when I use the
arrow keys to move the text cursor around. Usually see a lot of
vertical bars--very irritating because they mask the current cursor
position since they look like additional cursors ! I change
fonts/subpixel smoothing
Ok, the problem does go away when I disable the NVIDIA driver through
the System-Administration-Hardware Drivers panel.
I think a priority needs to be settled upon, especially since new users
first experiences with linux are usually something like this:
1. Install
2. Surfing the web.

Hello there,
I can confirm having this bug too. Two different machines, both with
different Nvidia graphics cards. Running Hardy now but I think I had it
at least back in Gutsy, maybe even in Feisty.

Hello,
I have reported this bug 2 years ago on Gentoo Bugs. Someday this bug
disappeared but nobody has officially fixed it.
Please set the importance to high. This bug makes Evolution unusable for many
people. And with such bugs we never get bug 1 fixed ;)

I got the same problem with evolution editor. Here is a screen shot of it.

Hello,
I'm also an owner of a Nvidia card on Ubuntu 8.10 and have this problem when
using Evolution.
Furthermore I found the same problem when using LyX (LaTeX environment).
I've just opened the LyX tutorial from the help menu and could see this strange
behaviour which was familiar to me from
Confirmed on my system:
Ubuntu 8.10 Hardy Heron (Linux x86_64)
Evolution 2.22.31

I have changed my email program from EVOLUTION to THUNDERBIRD. The THUNDERBIRD
does not have this problem at all, and the user interface is almost as good as
the one of EVOLUTION, so I am satisfied now.
Still I do not understand, why the EVOLUTION developers permanently ignored

I can confirm this bug in the evolution editor window (nowhere else).
Switching off Compiz (NO visual desktop effects) takes care of the problem,

Can the importance of this bug be updated? I assume it happens on a lot

I have the same problem, and I found a way to reproduce it reliably (since it
does not always occur).
If I just type into a new window, everything is fine. But if I rescale the
window or activate another window and re-activate the evolution window, the
effect occurs immediately.
Since this
