I saw this issue again today.
Linux Mint 10.04 Xfce (32bit). As before, installing latex-xft-fonts
solved the problem.

Title:
\cdot and \times
I'm closing this bug. Although it would have been nice for Ubuntu 8.04
to install latex-xft-fonts, this seems impractical as you said
especially since Ubuntu tries to avoid changing older packages as much
as necessary.

\cdot and
I stand corrected: Intrepid does indeed appear to install the
recommended fonts package as well upon installation of LyX. Thanks for
pointing that out, Dara.
In light of that and the Debian Policy that Dara has listed above, I'm
happy with things the way they are for 8.10.
It might be nice to
I understand LyX recommends latex-xft-fonts, though those of us who
installed it through Add/Remove will never see this, and latex-xft-fonts
will not be installed (tested on 1.5.5-1 in Intrepid). Because this
causes misleading behavior on the default install (\cdot is
significantly different than
Marking as incomplete until a consensus is reached.
According to the Debian Policy Manual:
This [Recommends] declares a strong, but not absolute, dependency.
The Recommends field should list packages that would be found together with
this one in all but unusual installations.

LyX does recommend latex-xft-fonts, which should cause it to be
automatically installed when LyX is installed. I think there is no
reason for LyX to depend on latex-xft-fonts.

\cdot and \times appear the same in equations
Installing latex-xft-fonts fixes the problem. Thanks.
And to clarify, the appearance of \cdot was incorrect in the Lyx editor.
In the finished document in pdf, it was correct.

I remember having seen this reported as a bug in the past but I can't
find it. Can someone explain why we don't have a dependency from latex-
xft-fonts since this mostly breaks lyx?

Thanks for taking the time to report this issue and help to make Ubuntu
better.
Where does it appear to be the same? In the finished document i.e the
dvi, pdf or printed format?
Please report the exact steps you take to produce this problem.
Thanks.

Importance:
I can't check with lyx 1.5.3 due to problems with the backports
repository. However I tried both lyx 1.5.1 and 1.5.5 and I have no such
problem. Do you have the latex-xft-fonts package?

** Description changed:
Binary package hint: lyx
When editing equations, the \cdot and \times symbols look the same. Both
look like a x. I tried changing the screen font but they still look the same.
I am using Lyx 1.5.3-1 on Hardy.
Lyx 1.5.3 on Windows does not have this problem.
