It looks like this bug is resolved according to JohnHills comment #2. The message Lucent/Agere firmware doesn't support manual roaming is indicative of bug #498336 where the card fails to work with the uncorrupted firmware. If you think that bug is the one you are experiencing, subscribe to it

in my IBM X32 with Karmic and 2.6.31-9-rt #152-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT RT if I dont have the agere_sta_fw.bin installed it complains that it cannot download it. Nevertheless it connects to my home wifi (with password) with no problem. However I cannot connect to other networks which are open. Iwlist
