I had this problem as well. But I changed the xserver conf and this stopped my
Kubuntu 7.10 from booting. After switching back to the old xorg.conf the system
started just like before.

Well, if I use the "ati" driver then I cannot enable desktop effects. If
I use the "radeon" driver it activates the desktop effects (I can see

Hi there, I can confirm this issue with Gutsy 7.10. I haven´t this
trouble with Feisty 7.04. I can´t shutdown my system because my system
hangs. I have a Acer TravelMate 4050 with a Intel Centrino 1.6 Ghz and a
Intel Graphic Card.

Thanks for looking into this for me. It seems to have fixed itself after
I made following entries to have control copy and paste work in
terminal.
# gconftool-2 -t str -s /apps/gnome-terminal/keybindings/copy
"c"
# gconftool-2 -t str -s /apps/gnome-terminal/keybindings/paste

It seems that nuking ~/.purple leads to a correctly generated prefs.xml
on the next startup. So this bug is "fixed" if you only started using
Pidgin after the Gutsy release. Otherwise it might be a nice note to
publish.
