Fresh installation of Ubuntu Lucid x64 in VirtualBox 3.1.6 using bridged
networking and VirtualBox's Intel PRO virtual device, the device seems
to work properly until trying to install/upgrade software.

it would work completely.

Of course it's a kernel bug, no matter what an application does it shouldn't be
able to crash the kernel unless it's explicitly trying to do so. On that note,
I tested this against kernel.org a while back and didn't have the problem (with
the intent of adding it to the kernel bug tracking
(some of) the problems here are related to a bug in grub2, fortunately,
there's a workaround for now, the resulting entry looks about like this:

The issue has been resolved in the latest version of lucid.
