i had the same problem on debian...and you are right edit your
network interface file and set ethx (the network card on which dhcp
listens on) that it will start on boot time

vcd disks like this:
mount -t cdfs -o ro /dev/hdc /media/cdrom1/
then you can copy vcd tracks as .mpeg files easily.

I'm getting the same problem on my athlon64 machine, and a friend is
also seeing this on a dell desktop. Both these machines install edgy
without any problems.

I fixed it on by box by using this commands:
asoundconf list (to get a list of available devices)
asoundconf set-default-card devicename (to permanently set the def device)
I think we only need the second command to be executed by the OS using a
control on the GUI.
