На самом деле не удивительно, что XP на слабых машинах бегает быстрее.
Ведь она выпущена 9 (!!!) лет назад.
В 2006 году у меня был опыт установки нескольких дистрибутивов на слабый
компьютер (Pentium 166, 128 RAM).
Mandriva 2006 + KDE работала сносно медленно, может чуть медленее, чем XP.

1. Отрубить ненужные сервисы: syslog (спорно, по крайней мере на этапе
установки и настройки он нужен). На всех машинах используется набор
сервисов по-умолчанию
Я бы посоветовал Debian на гноме попробовать . По
субъективным ощущениям быстрее и резвее нежели Ubuntu.
Учитывая их родство допилить до аналогичного вида не проблема.

p.s. по поводу параметров ядра, пересборки, оптимизации ни у кого нет
опыта, соображений?? Например смена планировщика ядра, изменения времени

Сабж. Ничего, касающегося звуковой системы не обновлял.
Вместо PulseAudio использую Alsa.
До сегодняшнего дня все работало исправно.
Подскажите пожалуйста, куда копать.

Спасибо за ответ, кстати. Обычно во всех твиках рекомендуют наоборот
уменьшать этот параметр, увеличение как раз дало нужный результат, хотя
и требуется наработка.
Одновременный запуск VirtalBOX, Openoffice.org Calc и ответа на это
письмо занял менее 5 секунд.

Моё имхо, что подавляющему числу офисов этого не надо.

Я соглашусь с Сергеем. LTSP в данной ситуации будет лучшим вариантом, тем
более инфраструктурные задачи будут решаться куда эффективнее, чем в случае
десктопов. В Ubuntu LTSP нормально допилен.
