nvidia-glx-config makes the x-server crash (Tribe 5)

That's the only one I found back then. The suffix was .old, but I
changed it when I copied it to my home folder. So, sorry if it's not
helpful at all.
Another thing I found, though, is that the dpkg-reconfigure -phigh
xserver-xorg command doesn't work as expected ---i.e., back in Feisty,
I had
As I said before, I renamed it *when* I copied it to my home folder.
The problem with nv versus nvidia was the opposite: either restoring a
backup of xorg.conf that includes nv instead of nvidia, or just by
changing that word (nvidia) in the xorg.conf file, solves the problem
with the x-server.
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: nvidia-glx
After a fresh install, I enabled the restricted extras, installed
nvidia-glx and applied the nvidia-glx-config enable command.
On reboot, the x-server crashes. The Xorg.0.log shows (EE) entries
regarding the missing device at
Public bug reported:
Fresh install. When trying to change the master volume, nothing
happens. I can change the volume through audacious, but not from the
gnome panel. In the alsamixer, the master volume is changed only
when/if I modify the headphone levels (i.e., I can have the master

Binary package hint: synaptic
As said in the summary, the Mark Recommended/Suggested for installation
entries in the synaptic's context menu do not mark any of the
Recommended/Suggested packages.
** Affects: synaptic (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
I've been installing things since this morning, so I'm not sure about
the other packages for which it didn't work. The last ones I
remember are xarchive (I tried to mark rpm and p7zip) and xarchiver
(I tried to mark rar).
A few minutes ago, I tried the same with file-roller (i.e., marking
as far as I know, I'm running the last version (0.60ubuntu3). The
architecture is Pentium 4 (x86), 2 GB RAM, 2.2 GHz.
The items that I tried to mark are not grayed out after the click,
the Apply button doesn't become available and in the Custom
filters/Marked changes no application is listed.

Yes, gdesklets still fail to launch at startup, but not always (just
each 3 out of 5 times). It seems to me that the problem is related to
Beryl, but gdesklets is the only program/daemon in the startup list that
fails (e.g., the kiba-dock and MetaTracker always work as expected).

gdesklets
No, that's what I was trying to say: If I enable Metacity instead of
Beryl, then gdesklets works just fine.
I haven't tried to see if the behavior of gdesklets is similar with
Compiz (I tried Compiz once, and it did a very good job at screwing up
my xorg.conf, so I prefer not to try and use it
I know that one: My card is NVIDIA GeForce4 MX440 with AGP8X. According
to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidiathis
page, my video card is not part of the nvidia-glx-legacy collection,
is it?
Ubuntu 7.04 was working perfectly with Beryl (and the nvidia-glx
package) until
Public bug reported:
While upgrading the kernel from version ...12 to version ...13, the
update manager threw an uncompatibility problem with mscompress.
Applying the update once again seemed to have solved the problem.
After restarting the computer, the x-server did not start. I solved the
Public bug reported:
After the upgrade and restart, my wallpaper was not loaded (my wallpaper
is in a vfat partition, so I can easily know when something goes wrong);
fdisk -l showed that the hard disk was not sda anymore. The system was
pretty slow as well. I changed the fstab options from sda
Public bug reported:
When enabling compiz, it works only with low screen resolution
(1024x768) with no option to use my default resolution (1280x1024) and
keeps crashing when trying to open anything. When disabling compiz,
there is no option to go back to the default resolution

I added gdesklets to the session startup, but it doesn't work. I tried
again enabling metacity instead of beryl, but it still doesn't work
(i.e., I have to start gdesklets manually).

Since Adobe/Acrobat Reader is not in the Feisty repositories, I added
the corresponding Edgy repository and now the Synaptic Package Manager

This is just a comment regarding the install (keep in mind that I'm not
an IT or something similar):
Not everybody wants to migrate settings from the WinXP partition, so

This is a bug in GMT, not CUPS. My original test.ps file is not DSC
conformant. This has been corrected in the developers version of GMT
and will be in the next release (v 4.1.4?).
