Ok I'm back again
I'm still using the same kernel by the way I thought I had solved
the problem.
However the system hasn't remembered the setting, I'll try a reboot in a
second, and each window that opens seems to have an issue with deciding
which layout to choose!

I still get this bizarre behaviour, though with a slight variation.
I get a connection OK, but about a minute or so later, the interface
gets another lease from a dhclient that NM started, but nevertheless
doesn't regard as a belonging to it (unrecognised PID). NM then *stops*
the interface.
Better wording... why not accept a lease whereever it arrives from?
What seems to be happening is that NM *ignores* the provided lease
because it's mistakenly waiting for a lease from a different PID.
Things then time out.
Easy workaround: just accept the lease.
Fix: track them PIDs correctly.

even removing -smp option wouldn't fix the problem in kvm/hardy, as I mentioned
in my first post.
I have not tried KVM from jaunty, I don't have a jaunty machine. I have
tried kvm-84 compiled from source and it does not exhibit the problem,
same as kvm-83 from source.

I was getting similar error messages in hardy 8.04.
Using gconftool-2 --spawn did not spawn a gconfd instance, gave the

This might look similar to the bug (not reported) I noticed after doing
a fresh install of jaunty alpha 4 desktop on ADM64 on a 4GB core2 box.
I'm not playing with GL, COMPIZ, didn´t even switch to nvidia drivers
yet. Happens when going away for multiple days, after having locked
things with vlock

I apt-get upgrade ; apt-get dist-upgrade Jaunty every couple of days.
Since yesterday I am not having the reported problem any more. Now when
