I also have a Thinkpad T41 with the same video specs: ATI Radeon
Mobility 9000 etc. I tried LiveCD, Karmic, Alpha 6, with same result as
everyone else reporting above. System lockup which requires power
off/power on. Keyboard is unresponsive. I posted my version of the

While being no pro, wondering there is no xorg.conf in /etc/X11/,
As a follow-up to leleshii's comment, not only has this been around
forever, but the -no-backfill patch does NOT fix the problem (at least,
not for everyone) and introduces new issues (as documented in this bug).
I have voted for the bug at AMD's site and I hope some of the rest of

(Hold SHIFT at startup to get in GRUB, press E, delete the only the words

where you changed the color? If I understood it correctly, in Ubuntu
9.04 the textcolor of the windowpicker panel was customizable with the
fg[ACTIVE] setting in panel.rc:

Here are Xorg.0.log and dmesg after booting into karmic alpha6 off the
livecd (on a USB stick) and immediately disabling compiz. The system
hard locks within a minute if compiz is left enabled. After disabling
it, if I then go to re-enable it, the system hard locks almost
immediately.
