i have two Kubuntu Karmic installations, one on a desktop pc (2GB RAM, intel
Core duo 6400), another on a laptop(Touchsmart Tx2 1300). I have on both the
same problem that xorg process is eating up memory.
On the pc the nvidia-driver 190.42 and on
sudo apt-get remove xsplash solves this problem for me, although
presumably there's still a bug in the nvidia driver if xsplash can SEGV

Correct. The problem doesn't occur with libxcb1 1.1-1ubuntu1. I did
notice that this is exposed by the fact that we divert /usr/bin/firefox
to /usr/bin/firefox.distrib. The problem doesn't occur if
/usr/bin/firefox-3.0 is called directly. I also discovered a similar
error starting gnome-screens
FireBox with eGalax touchscreen controller.

Vesa isn't working on my computer either (bug 401214), but I have
965GM so probably not the same problem. In my case in only breaks with
KMS, though, so the kernel option 'nomodeset' and
Ubuntu Karmic.
2.6.32 rc7 (vanilla and Ubuntu's one built manually using working .config from
2.6.31.5 with make oldconfig) doesn't work as it should: no bootsplash, no gdm
start progress, no gnome desktop at all. Only horizontal lines that randomly
appears and a mouse cursor on it.

Thanks for testing against so many different distros. Can you attach an
xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log and xrandr --verbose from Sabayon or one of the
other cases where it did work?
This sort of sounds like broken edid from the monitor, but that data is
not shown in this Xorg.0.log. Please see

This happens also to me with open office, the browser sometimes and
maybe other apps non related to the emacs
I am using a T61 lenovo laptop and this only happens with desktop
effects to anything other then none. I get it to occur from scrolling
mostly with the wheel on my external mouse.

GNOME-Sensors applet reports CPU stable at about 60 C, GPU climbs slowly
up to about 90 C, then the system shuts down.
On 9.04, I had
Kwinz, I experience the same problem of the sound stopping for a second
when closing the lid! This also occurs when Gnome decides to turn the
display off via DPMS... the sound hiccups for a second.

This also occurs with ksnapshot's region capture mode feature. As both
these involve transparent overlays of things, I imagine this is in fact
the same bug.
