It was working Ok till the upgrade in Ubuntu and Xbuntu went into drivers for
nvidia on Ubuntu and used the recommened driver, now screen all black,

Ok, so here is the workaround... while we expect for a solution.
Considering my xorg file above, I added in "programs at session
startup", the following command:
xrandr --output default --mode 1280x1024
This uses the Modeline as defined in the xorg.conf file, and thus now
the xorg log shows:

Hi Ben, If Update Manager still wants to install the old driver, go to
Synaptic Package Manager and lock the new driver. That way in will stop
it from wanting to install the old one. Once the new driver is released
then unlock it.
