This happened to me too. I'm pretty sure it's because you have no window
manager running. I set things to run `compiz --replace` at login. The
same thing should work if you want metacity: `metacity --replace`. Put

My freezes also occur when the laptop is idle for a long time, though I
don't close the lid or suspend the computer: Screensaver - screen off
(but never suspend/hibernate)...
So it certainly looks to me as though these freezes are different.

[i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd
Isn't the kernal patch applied at some point such that it is present in
2.6.30 release (that's how it's fixed for Karmic)? And wouldn't the xorg
fix be present in bleeding-edge code like
2:2.7.99.1+git20090605.66ceedc0-0ubuntu0sarvatt2~jaunty (bryce's magenta
PPA seems to be patched 2.6.3)?

Are we sure this involves showing only the wallpaper? My laptop freezes
under near-identical conditions, but shows only a blank screen (actually
it is powered off, not just black or blank), as reported at

This appears to be a bug in the way compiz handles keeping the size of
animated cursors constant with enhanced zoom. It shrinks your real
cursor down to nothing and draws a new cursor... when you zoom back out,
it fails to resize the original cursor, but stops drawing the new one

Not sure why this is related to nvidia - I'm using intel graphics and

if it's fixed with new kernel and xorg updates)

Yes, I asked specifically because there is a(nother) regression in the latest

@zwaldowski:
Yes, same here. There was an update to xorg-intel stuff yesterday - I'm
reasonably sure that's the cause. Prior to that, no problems. After
that, freezes (though perfect performance until such a freeze). FWIW,
I'm using 2.6.30-020630rc8-generic.

While using UXA, opening System Preferences Screensaver reliably
freezes X, including the mouse/cursor. After commenting out the UXA line
in xorg.conf I could open and change settings in the screensaver dialog
box without any problem. Re-enabled UXA and the freeze returned.
