Michael did you try both drivers from my PPA?
You have to install the intel driver and one of the fglrx ones.
Moreover, when you say unity does not load, what is the exact symptom?
a) You can see the background and the windows but you have no menus and no
window borders, or
b) You get a message
Install the official drivers, boot, press Ctrl+Alt+T to open a terminal, write
compiz -- replace
and post the output

I think I've hit basically the same problem Oleksij is reporting (blank

it plugged in while booting
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=844985).
Aside from the fact Oleksij uses VGA and I use HDMI, it otherwise

I don't understand what you mean by 100% zoom, but I
I'm not sure anymore that monitors.xml has anything to do with it. Can

I can reproduce the bug by rebooting and then plugging in a second
monitor. I can workaround the bug by removing the .config/monitors.xml
before my X session starts.

Public bug reported:
I've just upgraded to 12.04 from 11.10, and now when I connect my
external monitor, either before or after login, my X session freezes up.
It also seems to stop ctrl-alt-Fkey from letting me switch to a
console.
I've attached an Xorg.log that shows me booting up with both

So, I renamed .config/monitors.xml and this has sort of fixed it. I'll
attach my old monitors.xml in case that helps anyone.

From the console you can get back to the login screen by issuing the
following command:
sudo service lightdm restart
This has the same effect of killing Xorg as Alt+Print+K - kills the
session without logging out and saving data.
