Modern linux installs can handle read/write on NTFS but I highly suggest you use ext3 for maximum future-proofing and reliability. For the price of a NAS box, you can simply get a cheap used PC which will be faster and easier to work with. -- SuperQ

You will have to have Linux mount the drive on your XP box with iTunes. I did this with Solaris and XP and it worked fairly well until my wife started buying DRM infested music... What you'll need to do is share the iTunes folder on your XP box then use smbmount from the Ubuntu box to mount it.
