I'm in a quite similar situation. I just build my own NAS, testing it
out a bit. I settled on using ZFS for data integrity, but have not
decided on the OS. I prefer Debian CLI but am quite charmed by how
complete FreeNAS is. It has most of the things like logging, checks,
alerts and reporting sort

Initially I thought the price was on the high side. But, Its a high
quality case, the machining of the bamboo is 1st class. The package is
great too, even down to the screwdriver

I'm a FreeNas/FreeBSD novice who mostly uses linux and have not tried
the instructions in this thread or RichieB's build script. But this
port may provide an alternative:

They were both recent 7.9 versions - and the original is now working
fine again after a reboot.

My issue is a ALSA issue not squeezelite.
If I try to send a 24 bit wav file with aplay, I have the same issue :
Odroid C1 crashes.
probably a bad alsa install.

Hmmm - tried on a different RPi server but with same JiveLite and it
worked fine ... so looks like I have a local problem and it is not
JiveLite issue.
It might work with LMS 7.9 but not olders?

I think that there might be an issue with Jivelite in piCorePlayer
displaying cover art where the source is via https.
Doing some diagnostics at the moment.
For example - this does not display
