Michael, Ok - I burned the SlimCD 1.87 Beta 2 ISO to a CD and booted. I had created a bunch of test files and put them on a USB pendrive. I simply mounted the pendrive, pointed Slimserver to it, and then played all the test files, and they all worked. I did not worry about the specific conversion

Ron, I'm no expert in transcoding and mplayer (that's rather bpa). But there's one important note regarding mplayer used in SlimCD: it's flipflip's patched version to allow piping data to stdout. This was needed because there are some limitations writing to the audio output device in SlimCD.
