Michael,
I noticed that the SlimCD page on your site states that SlimCD has been
downloaded more than 11,000 times in the past two years. That is quite
impressive!

Michael,
Thank you. You are right - I have been using the HDD install, not
frugal, and I had forgotten about the restore:) It is working great
now, and I see you have 1.87a online!
The creation of SlimCD is a great service Michael.

No problem - it was me :-). You sent me the full strings.txt from which I
extracted the custom-strings.txt. What's odd in all this is that I've set
my editor to always use Unix style line endings (as I've encountered the

As far as Rev 76 firmware - that is very strange. For both 1.87 beta #1
and then beta #2 I checked the Slimserver Firmware folder,
/opt/slimserver/Firmware, and Rev 81 is in there! So, what was going
on?

Michael,
Ok - I burned the SlimCD 1.87 Beta 2 ISO to a CD and booted. I had
created a bunch of test files and put them on a USB pendrive. I simply
mounted the pendrive, pointed Slimserver to it, and then played all the
test files, and they all worked. I did not worry about the specific

I think so. It's the same as I'm using in SlimCD.

Michael,
Since we were talking about SlimCD as being used as a permanent music
server instead of just a demo earlier in this thread, I thought I would
post the following here.
I have gotten my SlimCD installation, running on a Nano-ITX machine, to
the point where I am satisfied with it.

Yeah, frugal uses a little more memory. I did frugal myself, only backing
up to flash as you do.

Steve,
At present I am storing the SS database on the internal IDE flash, and
the music tracks are on an external hard drive. I have also smbmounted
drives across my local network.
Ultimately, I would like to be able to put in a larger IDE flash and
put all the music on that, but I guess we are

The Nano-ITX enviroment that SteveEast and I are using is small, but
SlimCD fits easily with lots of room to spare. I have 1 GByte of IDE

drive. Aside from the DSL environment and Slimserver, I have added the

Well it certainly helps to have a Unix background. On the other hand,
when I look at what I've had to add or tweak to get it to run, it's
really very little. Modify bootlocal.sh to mount my network music

much. The key is only using

I know. SlimCD's origin is a mini-itx system I built for myself, running
everything from a compact flash card. B

Michael,
It appears that the alac codec I have is not working, and that is why I
could not decode Apple Lossless files.
When executing alac, I get the fatal message that the kernel is "too
old" followed by a segmentation fault.
The solution was another modification to SS's convert.conf file, an

Son-of-a-gun - that works! I can use both aac and aacPlus now, using

Ron,
I'm no expert in transcoding and mplayer (that's rather bpa). But there's
one important note regarding mplayer used in SlimCD: it's flipflip's
patched version to allow piping data to stdout. This was needed because
there are some limitations writing to the audio output device in SlimCD.
I changed convert.conf to try something more similar to what is on the
wiki aacplus page.
