If this X11 issue persists, I recommend using NeoOffice.
(http://www.neooffice.org/) A free, Mac-friendly version of OOo.
Although this software is often a release behind current OOo software,
it allows you to use OOo without having to go through X11.
I use it, mostly because I find X

The closest to publisher, in OOo, is draw There is an opensource
desktop publishing program called scribus which, I believe, is
comparable to publisher...
